I have a Mediasmart Server EX470 and one of the first things that I tried to do was change the server drive for a new one. I tried to replace the stock Seagate AS 500gb drive with a Seagate NS 250gb drive. My thoughts here were that the NS class drives were certified for 24x7 operation and would last longer. Also because of the way that WHS works, I didn't think that a large landing zone would be necessary, with PP1, you definitely don't need a big one, since everything goes directly to the drives.
The problem came up when I tried to install it, I hit the power button to restart and put a paper clip in the front reset button to set the server in recover mode, and the lights on the server would never stay red and it was never recognized by the server reload software. My thoughts at the time were that because the drive was only 250gb that it would not be recognized for the server drive. It works fine for the storage pool though.
I was thinking that there is something in the system bios that is preventing me from making this a system drive. This is just a guess on my part and I was wondering if anyone else could validate it. If it is true, what is the minimum size of a system drive for a Mediasmart? Would a 320gb work or would it have to be a new 500gb? Could you have something bigger than a 500gb?

I think the minimum is 80 gig. 20 for the System drive the rest for DATA.

If you read other posts, you will see that any size drive above 500 gig will also work.

There is no BIOS mandated size. I believe you're probably not entering Recovery mode correctly, make sure about only pressing the button with the paperclip momentarily while the health LED is blinking red/blue. It should change to red/purple after a few seconds and stay that way until the new recovery image is in place.
