When I have one of the 1.5 TB drives, everything works fine. As soon as I put in the 2nd one, the system won't boot. I have swapped drives and still get the same result. I have just placed them both in the MSS (bays 2 and 3) and so far, so good. I moved 2 WD10 EACS drives from the MSS to the TR4M-B and all the drives seem to be working.

Is there any known issue with 1.5 TB drives in the TR4M-B esata enclosure?

BTW - I tested both drives in a tower system running Windows XP and neither showed any errors.

Thanks,
Ian

There shouldn't be any problems with 1.5TB drives in general. I have 4 Seagate 1.5TB 7200.11 drives in my TR4M. You should contact Sans Digital tech support if you can't get the drives to work properly. They are generally very responsive. Also, keep in mind that a bad drive in an external enclosure will usually prevent the MSS from booting.

Hi Ian,

We do not have any know issues of 1.5TB for eSATA model. As Cavediver mention, a bad drive can cause the lock up. On the other hand, WD 1.5TB is no tested. We only tested 2TB version of the WD hard drives and does not show any issues. I do not expect WD 1.5TB have issues since 2TB is the same series.

The 1.5TB we used mostly is Seagate 7200.11 version of 1.5TB.

Thanks,

Best regards,
Stanley

Thanks. I would have thought it was a bad drive. However, it is working fine in the MSS. I will see how it goes over the next few days.

Thanks,
Ian

Now, I returned this unit and received another one and I get the same errors. I have tried different SATA cables different hard drives, I populate the hard drives from the bottom up, I installed two other hard drives in different bays and I get the same thing
I can not seem to be able to add any hard drives....

SO NO ONE CAN HELP WITH THIS?

I'd try removing any partitions that exist on the drives, and you can also try creating a new partition and formatting it.

Delete all existing partitions on the drive, re-initialize the drive as a basic drive and do a quick ntfs format.

what do you mean by "re-initialize the drive"

I took a 1.5TB drive ran a lo-level format to get rid of the MBR then turned both WHS and the TRM4 off. put the HD in the TRM turned it on waited a few min then turned the HP EX470 WHS on after a while it booted up and you can see the new drive. I proceeded to add the drive and get error

Sounds to me like a bad cable or possibly enclosure. I'm not sure what else to suggest, you're likely best taking this up with Sans Digital tech support.

My tr4u should be waiting for me when I get home. Western Digital 2 Terabyte drives (Model: WD20000CSRTL | SKU: 9234465) on sale at best buy, seem to be same price as newegg at the moment.

Couple of questions I couldn't find when reading through this post might be helpful for others...
1. Do the USB TR series models report SMART information? Is this important to have?
2. People on newegg rant about failures of any of the green drives, but most then admit they're using in raid5. It seems mostly related to +10 second spinups making a raid setup think that there's a problem. In WHS and/OR the T4 series with JBOD mode to be added to the pool - is this a problem?

Going USB for convenience - I don't stream, appleTV syncs for me!

Thanks,
Twy

No. You will not be able to see smart information from the USB attached drives. Is it important: not really.

No.

I just ran a low level

how do you format the drive without creating a partition first?

I got my TR4u setup last night with 2 1.5TB Green Drives. No problems. Took a couple reboots on the EX470 before it would recognize the added storage.

As did I... tr4u with 2 seagate 1tb green drives, no issues... seems nice and quiet. I'm half tempted to tear apart my mybook enclosures and throw those drives into another tr4u - the mess of cables and number of required usb ports was driving me nuts on a computer, let alone a mss. Seems like a shame though.

Also - any experience on if the fan of a tr4u dies, does it takes the drives with it? A different sort of "all eggs in one basket..."; if the enclosure dies but drives are ok, I'd be fine.

Dang, my first problem with my media server! One of my TR8U's is dead. It won't power on or anything. Nothing happened that I know of since I used it last, and I just watched a movie a couple days ago with no problems. No idea what could have caused it. My other one is fine though.

I just emailed Sans Digital tech support to schedule a warranty service on it, so hopefully that will go smoothly.
