Hi, my names Kawa90, I'm from the UK.

I got a mediasmart server from my uncle today. I dont know what version it is. By the looks of it, its just a shell. No harddrives, nor any harddrive bays, no fans, no PSU. Also I doubt it has a motherboard.

However it does have a board for the USB and eSATA ports.

I want to know, where I could purchase the appropriate parts for this shell? It doesnt have to be the original HP parts. I do want to restore this into a functional, good and affordable server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I took some pics, but i don't know how to show them, because the system doesnt let me put in any links. And if I upload them here, the image becomes too big.

Thanks,
Kawa90

I just opened it. And the model reads: ASSY HOUSING/SKIN/W ESATA DEMO.

What does this mean?

It means you have the demo version. Basically a useless shell with flashing lights.

Upload the images. There are plenty of big images here and seeing what you have may help get better answers.

That is basically a DEMO UNIT (shell). Its used in retailers to show off the unit without the risk of it being stolen (unit, drive trays, drives, etc).
Compusa had it before they closed, also seen it at Circuitcity and OfficeMax.

By the time you buy the pieces you need (assuming they can be purchased individually) it would probably be cheaper to buy a ready made unit. I noticed that the sata backplane is missing along with the items you mentioned earlier. At one time someone was offering to give away some extra drive trays they had. I don't remember which thread it was in but a search would find it.

Yeah, i see. I can buy some other parts. I mean it doesnt have to the original HP. I dont need to create anothe mediasmart server. It just needs to be a regurlar server. So what motherboard would fit this case?

I'll search around for that thread, see if i can find it.

Thanks,
Kawa
