Post subject:  Restoring server with Windows 10 x64 client OS

Hi - my question has probably been asked many times before, so sorry if I repeat.

My WHS v1 - HP MediaSmart EX475 - needs to be restored, but I am not able to complete the restore process halts "...can not be run on this OS".
I have tried both Windows 10 x64 PCs and a Windows 7 x64 PC, with all kinds of compatibility settings and administrator privileges.

Is it really not possible to restore this server without a 32 bit, really old Windows version?
Can it be done from a Virtual Machine running under Windows 10 Pro x64?

Any other way...? :-)

Did anyone try booting Windows XP from Hirens Boot CD and run Server recovery from there? Will that work?

Windows xp 32 is probably the best success rate.
I have windows 10 64 but one box I am still on win10 32. And it works.
So possibly you need a dual boot.
Or if you try Hirens Boot CD you need to have a drive that you can insert the recovery cd in after boot.

I have kept an old avertec laptop that could not be upgraded to win 7 as a server re-loader. It has winxp 32 bit I believe.
I have copied the contents of the cds for recovery to the desktop, so it is always ready to go. Just have to disable the wireless nic.
Good Luck
I have no win 10 pc's in the house.

The other way would be to run windows 7 32 bit under virtual box https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads . Virtual box is free for personal use and you can download a copy of windows 7 32 bit from here https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technolog ... nload-tool and use is unactivated for a month, plenty of time to restore the server

I never managed to get the Recovery CD working on anything else than Windows XP, 32-Bit.

Don't forget the standard prerequisites:

* Wipe the harddrive completely before you run the recovery wizard. It only works on a completely blank (as in no partitions of any kind) harddrive. If the installation fails for some reason, you need to pull out the drive, clean it in another machine and re-insert it into the MSS.
* Also, Only 1 disk inserted in the bottom-most tray
* No USB drives connected
* A crossed networking cable between your PC and the Mediasmart server.

I've had numerous issues with running WinXP virtual. The MSS disconnect and connect the networking cable, forcing the recovery wizard to issue a new IP address. This only works if the cable connection is physical (or the physical state of the connection is replicated into the virtual machine.

If doing a reset then you could just have the os disk installed. Because all the pool drive will be formatted.
If trying to preserve data on the pool drives , then all the drives need be be inserted prior and then run recovery not reset.
And I have never needed a crossover cable.
