I am still using an HP EX470 Home Server but have recently had a rash of failed hard drives.
The Seagate Barracuda 7200 drives seem to fail within a year of installation.

I am considering replacing the system drive with an SD drive.
Has anyone tried this and if so could you recommend a particular drive.
If not can you recommend a better SATA hard drive?

I've also seen some posts about a debug board and connecting a keyboard and monitor to the EX470 without going through the ENET connection. CAn you direct me as to how this is achieved.

Thanks much.

Hello and welcome. It has been my experience that seagate drives do not fair well, but I have seen some that are still running after 10 + years.
You can see in my signature that I have a preference to a couple of different drives. I run the 2tb WD reds in my main server, they run cool, do not have to be aligned and seem to do very well. The other drives I prefer are faster but do run hotter.
I sleep my server at night when no one would be using it anyway which effectively doubles the life of the drives I believe.

On the vga cable, you might want to garb one quick, sounds like they are going to stop making them:

I bought two right after I bought two whs 2011 disks as I thought I would be upgrading, but the whs V1 ia still running strong and working well (so far).

Good Luck
I don't want to get a harddrive war started, but I will not use seagate drives, I give them away :-)

Gardian:

Thanks for the quick response to my questions and valuable info.

I've ordered the piece of equipment to connect a vga monitor, keyboard and mouse to the server. It ships layer in the week.
I googled Seagate and looked at the comments. It seems like a lot of people aren't too happy with the reliability of some of their drives.
I'll look into replacing this drive with a WD as you suggest as well as the others as they fail and I'm sure it will be just a matter of time.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how I make out.

Joe

P.S.
One additional question.
Is a WD RED NAS SATA drive compatible with an EX470 HP server or is this for high performance commercial servers?
If not, can you recommend a good WD SATA drive for my server?

Not asking you to get in a war but I am done with Seagate. That is what it originally came with and I've replaced all 4 of the drives over the last several years.

Thanks again.

The WD reds will work in any server 2tb max each.

Also, don't forget (if you don't already have it) to get the free Smart addin to keep an eye on those drives.
