I'm trying to get the SIS 191 Gigabit NIC working with FreeNAS for my HP ex470. Does anyone have instructions or a guide to installing the FreeBSD drivers (which exist here):

http://people.freebsd.org/~yongari/sge/

...on my ex470 FreeNAS installatoin??

Thanks.

Trav.

I never got that far with FreeNAS... couldn't get around the kernel panic when using my basic (logitech) usb keyboard.

You're using a PS2 keyboard?

Ya, the Free NAS install pukes when it runs into USB peripherals (Mouse and/or Keyboard). That took about an hour to figure out. Luckilly the VGA cable I have has PS2 ports for both. I ran out and bought a PS2 keyboard and then the Free NAS install completes ok, but the NIC wont work....

I did some hunting and the SIS 191 is not supported by Free NAS, so this will be interesting. Free BSD does support the NIC, so right now I'm installing Free BSD on an old machine so I can make the driver package and then boot the Free NAS environtment to a shell and try to load it into the kernel there. Should be exciting.....

The other thing I haven't figured out yet is how to get the Free NAS install to "see" the 256 MB onboard flash drive since thats the perfect location to put the Free NAS OS. I'm hoping it's just a matter of shelling out during the Free NAS install and mounting it like a linux usb thumbdrive. Here's hoping.

trav.

I think the next big release of FreeNAS will be based on the latest stable kernel which I think does include support for our onboard NIC -- I hope it fixes the kernel panics too.

It would be entertaining to fiddle with ZFS to say the least.

Did you guys (or anyone else, for that matter) ever get anywhere with FreeNAS and the EX470? I've got it installed, but ran into the unsupported NIC issue (I'm using 0.7.whatever was latest as of about a week ago).

For anyone else attempting an install:
1) Disable ACHI in the BIOS for the SATA ports, else the installer won't be able to see any drives except the built in drive that contains the WHS PE install environment.
2) If you don't have the VGA/PS2 adapter that was designed specifically for these machines (I created my own VGA adapter), you can hook up a USB keyboard long enough to tell the machine to boot from CD, but you'll have to unplug it after it starts loading.
3) To get around not having a CD-ROM attached through USB (because the installer will crash), I built a "prop" so I could hook an internal SATA CD-ROM to the top-most SATA port on the back-plane (which meant pulling the PC out of its case). This allowed me to install.

Here's hoping someone has an easy solution. :)

I got about as far as you did......I got FreeNAS installed (albeit not on the 256MB onboard flash drive which was what I'd originally wanted), but I also ran into the NIC issue. I tried compiling FreeBSD 7.0 NIC drivers and installing them in FreeNAS, which didn't work, but I'm not a linux expert. I ended up putting Windows 2003 Server on my EX470 and I'm waiting for the next release of FreeNAS, which will supposedly support the NIC driver.

If you do figure out that NIC issue, please let me know. Not sure when that FreeNAS release is coming out and the Win 2003 solution is pretty "fat".

I thought someone got it mostly-working when they built freeNAS against FreeBSD 8.... I think I remember reading that the next version of freeNAS currently in development is based on 8 anyway so it (hopefully) is just a matter of time.

I downloaded FreeNAS-amd64-LiveCD-0.8.4986M.iso and ran into exactly the same NIC issue. It's too bad CoreNAS/OpenMediaVault isn't ready (and both are seemingly unavailable for download/testing). :(

Are there any instructions anywhere for putting the FreeNAS GUI/tools into a normal BSD or Linux install? I tried looking, but couldn't find anything useful. :(

I've now run into the same NIC not supported issue with Openfiler and Ubuntu Server 8.10. I'm attempting KUbuntu 10.04 right now, but expect the same thing. I'm afraid I'm going to be stuck creating my own kernel. The only way I'm going to do that is in Gentoo (Because it's what I'm most familiar with), but I *really* want to avoid a full OS -- I just wanted something simple (and free!). :)

michrech, do the newer Ubuntu server releases resolve the issue? I'm interested in installing FreeNAS on my MediaSmart, and I'm not smart enough to compile my own kernel...

Apparently the FreeNas 8 beta is out...

http://freenas.org/FreeNAS

I recently picked up a second used mediasmart server. I am going to have another go at the freenas install and will let ya'll know how it goes.

Followup: So close, yet so far!

Tested the 8.0r5698 release

Booting from USB CD/DVD Drive works great. With the onboard sata controller set to 4P(IDE)+4S(IDE), FreeBSD is able to detect all internal and external drives (this includes those in the port-multipler enclosure!). I couldn't verify the NIC but the link status was active/Gigabit on the switch -- FreeNAS did not try to obtain an IP at this point. The install is keyboard interactive and unlike before (USB attached keyboards would panic FreeBSD) the USB keyboard worked and didn't crash FreeBSD!

I tried installing to a 1Gb USB flash drive. Installation though slow, succeeded. However the MSS refused to boot from the flash drive. For those reading who aren't already aware: The EX47x is very picky about what it will let you boot from -- if it's external/USB-attached it has to be either a CD/DVD-Rom or FAT/NTFS formated media.

I tried installing to a spare 500Gb WD drive... Installation was fast and succeeded. FreeBSD/NAS Booted, found all the attached hard drives but froze fairly far into the boot and then moments later shut-off -- I could have turned on boot logging / snapped a pic of the point where it crashed but wasn't feeling motivated.

I think the EX47x's pickyness about the filesystem of USB attached media makes it unsuitable for FreeNAS... unless of course someone publishes a guide on how to install FreeNAS on a FAT filesystem (I've read that it can be done, but I'm not motivated enough to figure it out myself).

I've heard the EX48x and EX49x series are less picky in this regard - someone should verify.

FreeNAS 8.0 Release Candidate 4 was published April 1st... Haven't tried it but you could always give it a shot. All you need is Video and a spare hard drive or USB drive (which has a chance of working with the 48x & 49x series)

RC4 Release Notes wrote:
Release Notes for FreeNAS 8.0 Release Candidate 4
---------------------------------------------------

Release Candidate 4 contains both bug fixes and new functionality over previous
Release candidates and betas.

FreeNAS 8 should be installed to a USB stick or Compact Flash device. It
requires a device of at least 1 GB in size. In a departure from FreeNAS 0.7
releases, the OS drive can not be used as a component for a volume, nor can
it be partitioned for sharing.

New in 8.0-RC4:

Snapshot functionality has been added. There are features to create periodic
snapshot jobs, create one time snapshots, clone snapshots (which can then be
exported as shares like any other dataset) and rollback to previous snapshot.

VLAN interfaces are fully supported. VLANs can be created from the GUI or
from the CLI menu on the console.

NFS shares can be set to use the full range of maproot and mapall options. In
addition, tuning is available for the NFS service to boost performance past
gigE networking speeds.

Users and groups available to the system from any source (local users, LDAP, AD)
are now presented anywhere a user or group is specified, whether it's volume
permissions, samba anonymous user, or NFS maproot.

Several functions in System -> advanced were hooked up, a few were deleted.
Powerd now works, toggling between the CLI script and a normal login works,
the MOTD updates properly, and the serial console works.

The kernel modules to support several RAID controllers were added, as well
as the modules to enable mount_smbfs to work from the CLI.

Thanks to several users in the community, multiple issues with AFP have been
resolved.

Several ZFS options have been exposed to the GUI, and the ability to edit
ZFS options such as quotas, compression, reservations on existing volumes
and datasets has been added.

Notable bug fixes:

Several errors that were causing volume creation to fail have been resolved.

User passwords were not propagating to the password files properly on creation,
this was causing issues with ssh access as well as samba access.

iSCSI device extents were not being dropped from the database correctly when
they were deleted, leading to devices "vanishing" from the GUI.

A bug in the way FreeBSD handles empty removable devices was causing processing
of the disk list to fail. If the kernel placed certain removable disks before
traditional disks the failure of the processing would stop the GUI from recognizing
all of the latter devices.

Lockd and statd were not starting when the NFS service was started.

Errata:

...

UPGRADES FROM FREENAS 0.7x ARE UNSUPPORTED

...

Usability of this Release Candidate:

At this point the feature set of FreeNAS 8 is complete enough to perform file
sharing tasks via NFS or Samba, using local users, AD, or LDAP, as well as
allowing the system to operate as an iSCSI target. The base technology of
FreeBSD, ZFS, Samba, and NFS is very stable and very well tested. While there
isn't an upgrade path from other storage solutions, including previous FreeNAS
0.7 releases, the system is suitable for new deployments provided the
feature set is a good match for the requirements.

A note about versions:

There's been a huge jump in version numbers. The intention is to have the
version number reflect the base version of FreeBSD used. This RC is based
on FreeBSD 8.2
, but this version of FreeNAS is called 8.0 as there are future
plans to add functionality that will get the versions caught up. Once
FreeNAS 8.2 is out, a suffix will be added, such as 8.2.1, 8.2.2, etc.

A note about filesystem technologies:

While this system does support UFS based volumes, such as gmirror, gstripe,
graid3, the primary focus is on ZFS. Many of the features are provided via
ZFS datasets, such as the ability to share subsets of volumes via CIFS.
This delta is likely to increase over time, the compelling reasons to use
ZFS are likely to increase as well. It is highly recommended to use ZFS
for new volumes, even if the underlying device is a volume exported by a
hardware RAID controller.

Upgrade images:

The following two upgrade images are available for versions of FreeNAS 8 that
have GUI upgrade capability.

...

Future plans:

Barring major bugs this is likely the last release candidate before 8.0-RELEASE.
There is one last bit of new functionality, which is GUI replacement of drives in
volumes, and a few small pieces, such as the ability to edit powerd settings in the
GUI.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freenas ... FreeNAS-8/

Followup: Tried it again tonight. Successfully got to the freenas console - ifconfig shows that the network card still isn't recognized (bummer!).
