Post subject:  EX475 - Upgrade or discard?
Hello everyone, I hope you can shed some light on what opportunities exist for my trusty MediaSmart EX475 running windows server 2003. The server is a 2007 model.

Status today is that 1 of totally 4, 1,5TB disks in the server is broken and needs to be replaced and I believe that the other 3 disks eventually need to be replaced to. All disks are six years old.

C disk of 20GB is packed with only 20MB space free.

2 questions that arise:

What can I do with that C drive that is completely full?
I have cleaned up and deleted files and uninstalled programs I do not use. Are there "hidden" unneeded files that can be removed beyond those the discclean tool finds?

Considering the age of both the server and the disk 's. Should I continue to use the mediasmart server and upgrade this with 4 new disks as well as new Operating System, or should I just discard the mediasmart server and switch to a new server or a NAS?

Are there limitations in the ex475 server in what upgrades I can do regard to the size of the disk and which Operating System I can use? Could I buy eg 4 new 3TB drives and install windows home server 2011?

well a clean os c: drive will have at least 10GB free.
I suspect you need to rdp to the server and clear your event viewer.
It may have a huge event log.

Thank you Ruben for helping me.

I deleted event viewer and got 700MB of free space. I then installed winrarstat and got a good overview of whats taking my C drive space.

I see that my Plex installation takes very large space but I do not want to delete that so do you see some of the other findings listed below which its ok to delete?

Well maybe I was not clear.
You don't delete event viewer.
You open it and delete all the logs.

I hope that is what you did.
There are several categories on the left.
you open each one and clear the log one at a time.
Some will get rebuilt like the audits.

But anyway plex eats a lot 6,6 GB.

yes that came out wrong, I deleted the logs, not the event viewer it self.

Any more files on my list I can delete safely?

Plex goes last.

I am not sure on the others.
the logs I would not delete.
They track recent activity.
Jetty I don't have, it must be some java app installed by you. Could be plex.

Temp files I would use the my computer.
Right click on c then select properties.
Under the general tab select cleanup. That way windows does its own thing.
May take a while.
But it will tell you the size and options to select what you want.

What add ins are installed.

There is another area on the C Drive where logs are stored but for the life of me I do not remember where they are but I believe they are in the Documents folder. Those logs can take up a large amount of space on the C Drive and they can be safely removed.

I think if you perform a site search using LOGS it should help you locate where they are stored.

I also get these jar files in this directory. My MSS creates 19 files everytime I turn it on. I do not have Plex installed and have been unable to determine what program is creating these files.

I delete these files before doing a monthly backup of my MSS but would really like to know what creates them in the first place.

I have an EX49x that's not configured for Remote Access and I have not configured nor turned on any of the media functions and when I followed your path the Folder Jetty is absent from my server. See below:

I have seen the Jetty folder in the past on my previous servers unfortunately none of my HP MSS Servers are configured for Remote Access or have their Media Functions turned on. My primary servers are custom builds but I do have an EX48x running WHS2011 not WHSv1.

Wow, mine are taking up 2.1GB. Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna delete em now!
