I just upgraded my Ex475 to a processor that wasn't listed so it was a chance I decided to take. It was a AMD ATHLON 64 X 2 4450B 2.3 GHZ DUAL CORE 45 W Processor. It's working perfectly but my concern is the temperature of 147 F. Am I asking for trouble.

Just an update. After running for a bit it shut down. Running too hot. Oh well it was a cheap processor. :)

The lower the operating temp the less stress is put on the cpu.
Same goes for all hardware drives ,etc.
Sometimes you need to balance your decision of what is acceptable between performance and temperature.

Okay looking at
https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-A ... H445BDOBOX).html
It is rated for 78 c which equals 172.4 f
You want to stay below that as much as possible.

Bear in mind that assuming all the fans are working and clean and you cleaned and used new thermal paste on the cpu heat sink there is a breaking in period.
Which means it will need to go through several heat to cool temps to disperse the thermal paste to flow in all the voids.

Also I forgot what drives you are using but if any are like 7200 rpm they run hotter and will radiate heat to the motherboard in the bay just above.
If you have any open drive bays you need to close the flap on the drive caddy.

Yup all the hd flaps closed and used artic circle thermal paste. One thing I noticed is no matter what speed I set the fans for they are only running at 554 rpm as I have the mss fan control app installed. not that way before I flashed with the new bios. Any ideas on that? Hard drives are 5400 rpm also.

I never had a ex47x so I never used the fan control app.
Why not just uninstall it and see if the rpms go up.

Yup that's the first thing I did and ever rebooted twice but fan still at 550 rpm. Re-installed the app just to see and it makes no difference in speed no matter how it's adjusted. :(

Well now we are back to a guessing game.
Fans that do not run to keep cool.
Could be back-plane needs to be reseated.
fan connector not seated correctly
Or the fans are bad and will not go past that 500 rpm.
Bad registry or bios
If you read the lengthy post for mss fan speed control they talk about such things.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1653
I think it is around page 8 or so

I have reseated the back plate several times. Fans ran perfect yesterday and the mss fan control would adjust fans. I think it's a bios problem. I went back to original bios and cpu. Reseated the connections several times. I did flash back to the original bios same prob. Fans still run at around 500 rpm and mss fan control doesn't do anything. Since I am retired and have nothing but time I just finished re-installing system as nothing saved on it and still same. Will take a look at that article but don't have much hope. Thanks for the suggestions

Ok I have a crazy idea but have tried everything else. There is a fan header in front. So run a cable with splitter to the rear and plug the fans in to that. Then the fans will run at full speed. Would there be a problem doing that if I select ignore the problem in the settings for not sensing fans running. Don't have any other ideas.

I have several mediavaults so I pulled the server backplate out of a working server and installed in my ex475 and unfortunately same results. I think it is the bios as I unplugged one of the fans connectors and and the rpm dropped to 0 in the settings and then I unplugged the 2nd fan but in the settings it's still showing that it's running at about 500 rpm even though all fans are unplugged. Any ideas other than the bios though I have reflashed it a couple of times. I guess if it's the bios I am screwed as tried original and modified with same results and no way I can download a new bios I am guess even though I guess there would be some modification to use a bios from another machine

As I said before I have never messed with a bios update because I only have a ex490.
With that said .
On my ex490 I use the debug board and in the bios setting there are options to change the fan speeds but you need to change them in two places one is to disable defaults or your changes will be lost when you reboot.

I do have a debug board but didn't notice those settings but to be honest never looked so maybe there is hope. Will check later today and maybe the 475 is similar to the 490 as far as fan speed. Thanks so much.

Unfortunately no settings in the bios so I guess I will just run the fans off the front header and disable fan error. Hate to do that as I am kind of a perfectionist but since I have re-flashed the bios a couple of times no other thing I can think to do. I have several mediasmart servers so it really doesn't matter but hate to be defeated.

Was going to order cable to run off front fan headed but them remembered all I had to do is pull the blue wire out of each fan connectors. Now the fans are running at about 2500 rpm which is great and noise is not a problem, I'm old and don't hear that well anyway :). Only not sure if the fans will last a long time but only have server on when i want to transfer files to it. Wish I could have figured out a different way to fix problem but still happy with my solution and now will try the other cpu again.
