I took the pluge and upgraded to two gits and it's a NOTICEABLE improvement. Much less sluggishness, and I no longer get the "SYS Drive is Failing..." message 5x a week (haven't gotten it in the 30 days since I upgraded). Also the console appears almost immediately. The only bad side is I ruined the two small screws in the last step and had to tape it shut with electrical tape (but hid that under the side panel so it's not visible).

Upgraded mine yesterday with a 2G stick from Newegg, same stuff that was linked on the first page of this thread. I took my time installing it so I didn't break anything, or strip out those itty-bitty screws in the front. 8)

Got it put in and up and running in no time. The connector software and RDP definetly come up faster.

I upgraded today. A couple of tips for anyone in the UK.

You can get a #00 Philips Screwdriver from Maplin for £5. See:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?Mod ... 8&doy=30m6

I got my memory from Crucial for £30.54
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspe ... 25664AA667

I followed the Home Server Hack instructions but just one word of warning. Look carefully at the arrows for where to undo the 'motherboard' screws. They are not the screws that attach the motherboard rather 2 screws lower down!

I used crucial as well — UK prices for electronics blow me away. I paid $40.00 Canadian for the same stick.

Those screws that hold the front cover on are small. And by small I mean ridiculous. Most difficult part of the whole process was getting them off and then back on.

Otherwise dead simple! 2gb rocks!

Upgraded mine to 2GB thanks to the helpful posts here and the great instructions at http://www.homeserverhacks.com/2007/12/upgrade-memory-in-your-hp-ex470.html.

Philips +#00X20mm screwdrivers was perfect for the troublesome screws.

I used Kingston KVR800D2N5/2G as someone else reported in this forum. (2GB PC2-6400 CL5 240 Pin DIMM - probably a bit overspec for what I needed, but at AU$46 it was the slowest I could get and a cheap upgrade)

Wow! What an amazing difference speed wise. Flicking between tabs on the console is a dream now.

Love how all the red lights come on first up just to panic you!

If I take it apart again, I think I might take a nailfile to the system drive lock. It's way too stubborn to lock/unlock with a coin...the cheap plastic is a mess from me trying. :?

Hmmm... that's strange. Mine's no trouble at all. Can do it with the pad of my finger!

Would this upgrade be worth doing for the average user HP had in mind when they built this unit?

Or only for power users like all of you?

I never even considered upgrading ram until I stumbled across this forum while trying to find information about Power Pack 1.

I need to make sure that there would be a good enough R.O.I. before I risk bricking my server and enduring the bi**ching from my wife that would undoubtably follow.

Also if you are already rootin around in there anyway!
What about the processor upgrade at the same time?

If you do anything outside of the stock programs for the MSS, then yes you will see a difference. HP shipped with 512MB to keep costs down. That doesn't mean they think you'll be able to run any and everything with that little amount of ram.
Forget the CPU upgrade.

Thanks mitch!

I was going to pick up a stick of memory at Best Buy $189.00
I know they should be able to turn a profit, But all of it on 1 sale to me :x

Ordered it from Newegg for $39 GSkill.

I had been flip flopping back and forth about the CPU, But have since decided that I am way to anal to allow the system to show the processor as unknown.

Besides I think that by the time that I would actually have a need for a better cpu comes around, HP will have a newer and better flavor of HP Mediasmart server that would drive me nuts if I didn't buy.

You can overcome this by performing a bios mod... refer to the X2 Thread Page 4 or PM me for details.... you only need to perform the 'agesacpu' part of the mod (not the acpitbl part) to get your processor identified.

Biggest bang for buck is the ram upgrade... cpu upgrade I think has always been a 'because I can' upgrade...

RAM upgrade = everyone :)
(Most bang for the buck, it´s simple to do)

CPU LE-1640 upgrade = just because i can
(NO bios mod needed for this one, quite easy. Only messy thing is the heatpaste)

CPU X2 upgrade = only for those who know what they are dealing with
(For EXPERTS only, bios mod is needed to get this to work. Screw this one up and your MSS is bricked.)

I knew all along that this would be a just because upgrade for me.

Actually, at first I couldn't see any improvement post upgrade compared to preupgrade.

After about 15 minutes console started opening up within 2 to 3 seconds.

I had to restart MMS to get Digital Archound to install. After restart was when I started to notice improvment.

I could not tell you if CPU helped with speed but, temp now running at 36 with LE1640 installed with the stock cpu the lowest I ever saw was 45.

Now all I have to do is flash the bios so CPU will be recognized.

YMBOC sent me instructions but they might as well be wrote in chinese to me.

What the heck is " Create a working bios directory"?

are there instructions for a breadman with a 3rd grade GED?

I realize that this stuff is hobby for me but, a job for most of you.

I know I don't really need it but, I like learning how to do new things.

It's a directory to use when you are working on the bios...
For example:
C:\Working directory bios\
C:\BIOS\
C:\What ever you want\

Just a new directory to put all the needed bios stuff in when you creating the new bios file.
