:sanjuan:

ready now!
RAM is at 2GB (Kingston DDR2/667 2048MB 667 MHz nonECC CL5)
And it seems to me significant faster!

I think my next step will be a CPU upgrade...

Unfortunatelly all these Microsoft updates of this week came up - and together with the RAM enhancement I had to restart the server. So I've got these updates, fine -> but it shoot down the server! I needed 3 times to restart until all my computers could work again. (I have used that time to update all of them...)

BTW: It looks like together with the current updates the data base (Twonky) was deleted. My TV does not recognize the media files -> they come uo one after the other, step by step. Mhmmm...

Has anyone tried a 4GB memory upgrade? What did you use?

I know that I will only be able to use 3GB but between Avast! and SageTV I am suddenly up from just over 1GB utilization to, at times, over 2GB. Thinking it may help to get that extra GB.

I've been looking also for 4GB but at the end decided to buy only 2GB. There's been a hint to http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 6&name=4GB for 4GB sticks.

Any opinions as to which might work best?

opinions? not really - but:
My thoughts has been to figure out the motherboard and after that check, which RAM is recommendend.
My motherboard I've got via Everest Home as
CPU Typ Unknown, 2000 MHz
Motherboard Name Unbekannt
Motherboard Chipsatz SiS 761, AMD Hammer
Arbeitsspeicher 2016 MB (Registered DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Typ Award (05/08/08)

Motherboard 05/08/2008-SiS-761GX-6A7IDAWGC-00
Motherboard DMIMOBO: Wistron SJD4
Motherboard DMISYS: HP MediaSmart Server
Motherboard R03 May.08.2008

But with http://www.cmtlabs.com/mbsearch.asp I couldn't find out the RAM, which fit to that... One of the reasons to use only 2GB...

I tried a Kingston 2 GB module and it didn't work. Had to do a system recovery afterward. I wish I had recorded the model # but it was PC5300 with Elpida chips and unusually short with no heat spreader (purchased at CompUSA). I exchanged it for some Corsair PC6400 XMS 2 ram. The Corsair ram has worked great so far. Now to find an X2 3800 35 watt processor......

this should be good enough

I think i might play around and get this for the server:

MUSHKIN ENHANCED SILVERLINE 4GB (This is the memory I used in this post)

Has anyone noticed any diffrence at all running 4GB on the ex475?

So Here is some things I need to know. If upgrading the ram in the ex495 do I still need to change the paging files. The rule of 1.5 at the min and 3 at the max gets me 6144 to 12288. should I use these numbers? also when I do a factory reset do I have to go back and reset this up or is WHS smart enough to know what they should be?

Colleagues,

Sorry if I am beating a dead horse here. I know that there are people here in the forum that have done the RAM upgrade to either 2Gb or 4Gb on an EX475. I did mine a couple of years ago to 2Gb and now want to go to 4Gb.

Could those of you who have a 4Gb stick on your EX47x please post the brand and specs of the one you bought? I want to make sure I purchase one that is working for members of this forum since returns of RAM are a real pain in the posterior.

Best regards.

T-Bone,

Thanks for your reply. I checked in Newegg and they have one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-226-089&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=2#scrollFullInfo) but all comments in there relate to EX48x and EX49x. I also checked in this forum and cannot find anyone with the user name you mentioned.

Not sure I want to take the chance until I can confirm with a member here that it works on a EX475.

This one more closely matches the original specs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148287 but it is quite a bit more expensive. The price difference I believe is due to availability and demand. Demand is low as faster DDR2 and DDR3 memory is becoming more common and availability is low because, well, demand is low. :D

I'm not convinced that the cost is worth it. You'll get more performance with a processor upgrade if you haven't already done it. However, suitable processors are hard to find. I suppose you could just buy my already upgraded EX470.
