I remoted directly into mine and noticed that it was using "579mb" of ram. Which is more than it has. So I could only assume that more ram would speed it up greatly.

Probably going to go with this upgrade myself.

Am I correct in assuming that the Remote Desktop connection requires one of the Vista 'Ultimate' OS's or can it be done from XP?

I keep getting a warning about the Remote Desktop Group and refused access even though 'Remote Access' is turned on for the particular account.

Access appears to be needed for changing the Paging File settings.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm new the the server fraternity....

Rick :(

do you really need to change the page file? isn't the idea of adding more ram to use less hard drive.
Iv read this page, it has some good page file info. http://www.petri.co.il/pagefile_optimization.htm

I have used my XP-Home laptop to remotely connect to my Vista Ultimate desktop client. The reverse does not appear to function and I seem to recall reading it would not. (Have not investigated this since Beta/RC1 days...)

Should you only have the page file on the sys volume? or can we add some to the data volume?

I would not put any page file on the D: volume, that volume spans multiple drives.

Nothing was mention from the AMD website (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Tec ... 54,00.html) concerning the use of the following memory: 2GB 240-PIN UNBUFF DIMM 256MX64 DDR (PC2-5300) with a Sempron processor:

AMD Sempron™ Memory Guidelines

In our ongoing efforts to support industry standards, AMD Sempron™ processor-based platforms may be designed to leverage industry standard DDR registered DIMMs. An independent testing company, Computer Memory Test Labs (CMTL), has conducted memory compatibility testing. CMTL is an independent test facility and is able to test RAM modules from different module suppliers. System builders should access the CMTL web site a www.cmtlabs.com and view the recommended memory module list for the specific motherboard manufacturer and motherboard model.

Note: The CMTL website is provided for informational purposes only, and AMD recommends that a system builder conduct its own testing and validation to confirm that the memory modules are suitable for its systems.

To view an up-to-date list of compatible DDR memory modules, click here.

Memory Supported

Several AMD Sempron™ processor-based motherboards currently support some of the following memory features:

PC1600, PC2100, PC2700 & PC3200 unbuffered memory modules.
184-pin 2.5-Volt DDR DIMMs.
64-bit DDR memory bus.
Supports 64-Mbyte, 128-Mbyte, 256-Mbyte, 512-Mbyte, 1-Gbyte, 2-Gbyte and 4-Gbyte memory technology.
Supports production DIMMs from industry standard DRAM memory manufacturers.

When using page files, it is usually recommended to put it to a set amount... For example: Set the custom size to 1500-1500 or 2000-2000.

This will minimize disk thrashing.

Got in in the end - was finger trouble at this end - that's the trouble with noobs like me, I know enough, but only to be dangerous!!

Now, are we limited to 2GB of RAM, or (if money were no object!!) can a larger slice be loaded and addressed, say a single 4GB block? Currently about $400 USD in the UK for such a beast.

Is another 2BG going to make a significant difference over 2GB, or is the rule of diminishing returns going to apply. :?:

I believe the limit is 2 GB of PC2-4800 ram. Anything beyond that I believe will not be fully utilized.

240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) is the correct ram to add.

PC2-4800 RAM? I never seen that . . .
I've seen PC2-4200 and then PC2-5300.

Where did 4800 pop in it?
