So I finally have some success of my own to report. I managed to find another 3800+ X2 EE SFF (35 Watt, 1v, 90nm chip) on ebay -- this time arrived with all pins intact! Orthos Stable for 10+ hrs. See Attached Screenies When idle CPU clocks down to 1Ghz (Not Shown)

Nice work! FYI, I've had no problems with my system since the X2 upgrade (over three weeks), but I think your X2 is faster! Any other differences? More cache? Maybe I should try the BE-2350!! What about overclocking it? |

It's pretty much just the predecessor of your chip... 35watt, 90nm, and without the cpu temperature probe issues that affected some brisbane chips (notably my BE-2400)... I've been puzzling over the following: For two chips, a 65nm & a 90nm, both running at the same voltage and clock speed, which draws less power? which generates more heat? and why? I'm not really interested in overclocking it. I think I've pushed the hardware envelope far enough. No options in the bios to do so anyway. I'm happy it scales down to 1ghz when idle. PS: I find it funny you don't mention in your sig how much storage is in your MSS |

As far as I know: thinner die technology (65nm < 90nm) & faster clocks are always hotter - something to do with more electrons bumping into each other? My CPU is 45W, 1.9GHz & 65nm, yours is 35W / 2.0GHz / 90nm and otherwise identical. Right? Do you wanna do a comparative test using SpeedFan or whatever (I've got no way of measuring power consumption)? Let me know. (off-topic follows) I am having huge problems feeling any love for DE. I get all sorts of issues with file locking & I cannot store VMware data files in the shares (so no data duplication). After exams are over (early July), I think I will either invest in another 500GB and try out the FakeRAID option, or go with Windows S/W RAID. ...or maybe PP1 will solve the problem for me. ------------------------------------------------------------- Hey everyone - check out my new sig! |

I think there are too many variables to do a meaningful comparison between yours & mine chips from afar in terms of consumption and heat generated. I noticed from your screenshots that your northbridge runs at a lower voltage & cooler than mine. The 65nm vs 90nm discussion is more of a 'thought exercise' for me. I wouldn't be so quick to blame the file locking on DE... unless of course you've done testing to confirm -- in which case I should be quiet. FakeRaid may on the WHS may not alleviate the problem though. Aside: Software/Dynamic Volume Raid cannot be extended to the drive the system boots off of. My Sig? Why do I need a sig?  I tried making one with links to useful posts but it exceed the 255 character signature limit.

great job Ymboc ,i was sorry to see you had some bad pin on your first 3800 processor but now have perfect proceesor for this project. 35watt is the way to go, it keep the heat factor down to 32-38 , my be-2300 is running a ittle too hot for me, i like the fact Ymboc is getting 32 with his 35watt processor ringht now i am trying to find 35 watt x2 for my replacement. |

Mentor: Take a look at the speedfan thread in the software section... there's some info there on fiddling with the system fans... If your system is prime stable I wouldn't worry about the temps. The chips themselves can take a more heat than they used to be able to. Also, the CPU isn't the primary source of heat IMO... it's the nortbridge. It actually runs much hotter than the CPU. |

I would have tried re-applying thermal paste before ordering a second chip... zxdavb has already demo'd that the BE-2300 is stable. Not worth the $ imo. I took some pics of how I applied the paste to mine if you'd like to see. Sucks having a spare chip you have no use for (like my BE-2400 for example )

So guys I know just enough about processors to be dangerous. I have no problem working on my own system, but I have read the posting above and was wondering if someone will give me the bottom line. Should I stick with the LE-1640 or is there an even better processor that has proven to work flawless? Thanks for any advice. |
