can someone aim me to model number(s) I should look for.

I searched for "3800+ EE SFF" on google and can't find any sellers anywhere...

It's pretty cool down here in the south as well. That is if the A/C keeps running which it pretty much does all the time. :shock: My NB runs around 57C most of the time. Adding a fan to it will be my next project. I'm also going to see if there is anything that can be done to maximize air flow to the PS. The way that big fat power cable runs right in front of the PS fan restricts the air flow. Not sure there's much I can do since there isn't much slack but I'll do what I can.

BTW, where did you get your fan? The smallest Fry's carries is 40MM and I seem to remember that 30MM is what folks have used on their NB.

The Processor you need is ADD3800IAA5CU and it is pretty tough to find but if you're persistent you can find it. I got 2 of them for each of my servers. The fan can't be any more than 30mm and Newegg was the place to get them, back in this thread or the Processor thread there is a picture of it. I mounted mine with the silicone rubber fan screws wedged in the heatsink and has no vibration at all and can't be heard.

That's looks like the right one though the price is up a bit. I think because it's retail boxed. Better move quick on it as they seem to go fast.

Remember that you'll need to do the BIOS mashing in order to take advantage of the proc:
viewtopic.php?p=10271#p10271

And I didn't check, but if you're not running 2gb of RAM, you REALLY wanna be. That's an excellent speed improvement.

In my cas- Ram upgrade (gskill recommended from homeserverhacks.com) with the 1640 actually caused shut downs very fast. 1640 alone with stock memory shutdowns happened after some abuse, ram with stock cpu is fine.

I'm hoping that the 3800 behaves more like the stock chip than the 1640 so I'll be ok.

If not I guess I'll have a couple cpu's up on ebay (although maybe I'll keep the 3800 for the homebrew I plan to get to in a few months...)

Good luck with the 3800+. My machine also shutdown with the LE-1640 and I had high hopes that the 3800+ with it's 35W power rating. Unfortunately, it was not to be and the 3800+ had the same shutdowns and stress test failures. I'm hoping (but not holding my breath) that someone can figure out another bios hack that allows tweaks to the MB power circuits. For the time bieng I have a very happy, stable and capable MSS running the stock Sempron processor.

Any suggestions as to what a guy should do when after following the included instructions and dropping in a BE-2400 (despite over heating warnings here) the system fails to post?

The system is still fully bootable with the original proc with the updated BIOS, just not with the new proc and the updated bios.

Dangle a 60mm fan infront of the MSS (connected to the CPU Fan header)... or alternatively get one of those USB fans.... it'll run but if you do anything stressful it will turn off on you. If you have a VGA cable try turning down the HTT link speed....

Q: Why are you trying the BE-2400 when it's been shown to be too much for the MSS?... had one to spare?

Last night I noticed that the rear fans on my MSS were running higher than they usually do. I checked and they were running around 2033 RPMs. They usually run around 1700 to 1800. The temps for the System and CPU were around 35C according to the Hardware Status screen. So I decided to shut it down for a bit and let it cool to room temperature. After15 minutes I restarted it and about an hour later it rebooted. This evening when I went to check on things I found that it had rebooted so I checked the Event Log and found a number of errors related to the backplane being hot and voltages being out of whack. These are the messages all related to WNAS;

Yes, sometimes it's the temperatures and sometimes the voltages and sometimes the fans but they always go immediately back to normal, sometimes they are high and sometimes low and they never shut the system down. I first thought it might be a sensor but since they all are involved it more likely is a bug in WNAS.
