Not sure what my idle is... I'm haven't been leaving the MSS turned on... just turn it on when I fiddle with it atm.... from earlier screenshots, System 40, CPU 33 but I'm not sure I let the idle temp stabilize for that screenshot.

It's all dependant on your ambient temperature anyway. I don't have AC yet but it's been a mild summer.

OK, after 9 hours of stress test and power off for 2 hours the idle temp is stable at 35-36 degrees. The system temp is at 30 degress at all time.
I have done some tweaking with the MSS Fan Controll plug-in, lower fan is set at 65% thats all...

Hi,
I've found a german retailer that apparently has this illustrious processor in stock (http://www.perloxx.de/index.php?page=detail&artikelnr=35024&kategorie=133) - I've ordered one a will let anyone know if it indeed turns out to be the right creature.

I got the processor last week - And it is indeed the right one. I've been running Orthos (Small FFTs) for a 10 hours (peek temperature 58 degrees centigrade) - No shutdowns, no problems of any kind.

"Peltier elements have very low efficiency. They will consume more power than they transport! Actual peltier elements may consume twice as much energy (in the form of electricity) as they transport (in the form of heat). So, if you are using a peltier element, the heatsink it is used with must be much more powerful than a heatsink used for cooling a heat source without peltier element. "

Question for you guys... BTW this thread is great! Thanks to ymboc for putting together the guide.

I have a EX470. I just upgraded the RAM to 2GB. I was thinking about going to a X2 processor or a faster single core so I decided to flash the BIOS. I used the latest ASUS Crosshair BIOS as the donor for AGESACPU (it seemed to have a newer microcode file) and the Shuttle BIOS for ACPITBL.

I used Winflash to do the flashing with the settings reffered to in ymboc's post.

Everything went smooth. Only issue is prior to the flash my processor would idle with Cool n' Quiet at like .99 volts. Now Cool n' Quiet is not working and the processor stays pegged at max frequency and 1.30 volts. This is making extra heat.

Any ideas? I do not have a cable to hook up a monitor. I reinstalled the Cool n' Quiet drivers to no avail.

Thanks!
Chad

Check the power options in the control panel on the server, make sure it's set to "Server Balanced" to enable Cool-n-Quiet.

Thanks for the reply. I checked that already. No Dice. I guess I could flash back the original BIOS to see if that fixes the problem... I am just concerened that the "clear CMOS" setting in Winflash may have defaulted Cool n' Quiet to off... I doubt a reflash would correct that.

Any way for someone to guide me through the BIOS blind to the Cool n' Quiet setting? Or maybe it is time for me to make a VGA cable as well.

There is no BIOS setting to enable Cool-n-Quiet on the default MSS, it's built in.

Hmm. Strange, I know my x2 chip slows & volts down properly...

Have you performed a complete shutdown/(power-off) reboot?

Still Running the stock sempron?
Is it still properly identified in the device manager?
If not try a different, perhaps older agesacpu?... its possible that the very latest agesacpu files have dropped support for these older sempron chips.

If it's still properly identified, try resetting the bios using the method described in the Changing the HP MediaSmart Server Power Management Setting thread.

I wouldn't recommend performing the bios mod if you're not going to be running an X2 chip... it's a bit of a kludge and a lot of dumb luck that it worked as well as it has.

You mentioned newer microcode... did you mean the agesacpu component or the info in the table at the end of a cbrom /d screen?

Can you post a cbrom /d screenshot of the bios you're currently running?

I did a complete shutdown and reset factory defaults as described. Still not working.

Processor is still properly identified in Device Manager and Resources tab in the console.

I figured the latest Crosshair BIOS would support more CPUs than the 6 month old Abit BIOS (Probably not a good idea). Here is the display of my current BIOS. The GV3 is larger.

I have attached a picture showing the processor idling at full speed. I was planning on getting a newer chip. Either dual core or single core. Maybe like you said a new chip will solve the problem...

Well I flashed back to the factory BIOS and Cool n' Quiet is working again. Strange.

Thanks for the help. ymboc, is there a problem with the BIOS I made? I was mainly trying to make sure it would support the 2.3GHz Sparta.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103188

I am trying to decide between the 2.3 Sparta, 2.7 1640B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103262
and the BE 2300
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103232

What would you recommend? I am concerened the McAfee Virus scanner that HP released with PP1 is going to slow down a single core system a little too much for my taste, but maybe I am wrong.

Would your BIOS with the donors mentioned in the guide work with any of these chips?

Chad

I would go for the BE-2300 (or if you are located in Europe i would go for a Athlon 64 x2 3800+ EE SFF, you can find brand new ones at Perloxx in Germany)

If you follow Ymboc´s tutorial step by step you will have a 100% compatible BIOS to run with LE-1640 or BE-2300 or Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EE SFF, Cool n Quiet will work...

I agree:

3800 X2 EE SFF If you can get it
BE-2300 If you can't (only 100mhz slower than the 3800, really you shouldn't notice a diff)

LE-1640 only if you're concerned about getting the fastest single-threaded performance (really, you shouldn't be). That said has anyone actually stress-tested these lately?

Maybe BullHead will make you a deal on a BE-2300 ;)

Just comparing the agesacpu file sizes and it looks like you grabbed one of the new enormous ones where half of the file is dedicated to just Triple & Quad Core CPUs...

Try one of the older smaller ones.

Speculation: It's possible the format of agesacpu has changed so much they might not even be compatible anymore without an update to another part of the bios. (shrug).

Let me know how it goes.
