That depends...

Do you already own a LE-1640? If you do I would recommend against upgrading to an x2 *unless* you find yourself using your MSS to run tasks, programs, services, etc that eat most of your cpu cycles most of time. If your chip's going to be idle 90% of the time, there's really no point.

I think someone mentioned they were running a CS:S (game) server on their MSS -- that is a good example of a service that's going to be eating a significant number of CPU cycles and one where the game server as well as the rest of the server would benefit from having a second cpu available.

Now, if you're still running with the stock cpu and you find it inadequate (you shouldn't really unless you plan on doing more with the MSS hardware than it was intended for) then I would recommend getting an X2 chip over the LE-1640. It just doesn't make sense to buy a single core chip anymore when you can have a dual core for about the same amount of money.

So only in those two cases (excluding the 'because I can' case) and only if you're serious about 'needing' more cpu power would I recommend you purchase either a BE-2300 (easier to find) or an X2 3800+ EE SFF (90nm 35Watt, rare - pretty much you can only find them second hand now).

Aside: There should be some newer even cooler running X2's mentioned earlier in the thread coming to market some time this year but in unknown numbers through unknown channels... its possible newegg may carry a few of them but keep in mind newegg didn't even get the 3800+ EE SFF... (there was a big fiasco when newegg advertised the 35watt chip but shipped the 65watt version instead.)

I dont own a LE-1640 yet but have read about the success. the reason I want to upgrade is because there is lag at time when I am both write media to the server while at the same time serving HD content to another network device. It also just seems sluggish at times. I would like to run other services or programs on the machine but I would have never even considered it until i read up on the upgrade.

So..the two chips you listed, have you had person success with one of them? have they been proven failsafe by other users on here?

Thanks

That sluggishness has probably more to do with network congestion than anything else -- serving HD content is going to slow down access for everyone else no matter what chip you have in there.

Make sure you try the ram upgrade on its own before buying into a chip... this will have a greater effect than any cpu upgrade.

I have shown the 3800+ EE SFF to be stable. (Many hours of stress testing)
zxdavb has shown the BE-2300 to be stable. (Many hours of stress testing)

In addition there are a few others running the BE-2300 but its not clear if they stress tested. Mentor notes that he felt his BE-2300 ran too hot.

I think so long as the chip stays under 60° Load / ~45° Idle and is prime/orthos stable its all good. Just make sure you don't apply too much heatsink paste (I may later show how much I applied) and you'll be okay with either of the above mentioned chips.

ymboc said it all, i just want to add one more fact a location with good air flow, i just change my MSS location now be-2300 is runnig about 5C cooler

Has any of you tested this cpu: AMD Athlon X2 4450e / 2.3 GHz?
http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCP ... spx?id=427

TDP 45watt

This URL may be informative: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-power-cpu,1925-11.html

It says the Sempron 3400+ draws 28.9W, my BE-2300 33.2W, whilst the 4450E 42.8W - the difference may be too much to bear. Mind you, it also says the 3800+ EE (a 35W chip?) is drawing 45.2W!! (if I have the models right)

IMHO, a CPU upgrade is definitely a worthwhile exercise, but I am unsure if a BE-2300 (X2 @ 1.8GHz) is better or worse than a LE-1640 (2.6GHz). I am running a couple of VMs (VMware server), so X2 is good for me). I would say most people should just wack in the LE-16XX (cheap, no BIOS hack), unless you're just the adventurous type...

All I can say for sure is that my CPU is running fine, even after I stuck the unit in a cupboard in the kitchen (is less dusty than the loungeroom & the PSU fan was way too loud). I used ymboc's registry patch to increase the fan speed as a precaution, so WHS console says both fans run at about 2050 rpm, and both temps around 41C. SpeedFan says Core at 20C.

FWIW, I have never had any behaviour that could be attributed to overheating. I plan to try faster CPUs in the future, after exams are over, maybe starting with a BE-2350, and will report any findings...

No, but the BE-2400 & 4050e were tested and shown to be unstable... I don't expect the 4450e to be stable.

FYI: The BE-2400 is also 2.3Ghz and should be more or less identical to the 4450e.

Cheers

Aha.... thanks for the info...

I really don´t know what cpu upgrade i want LE-1640 is easy to find in Sweden, BE-2300 is not so common here.

A X2 cpu would be nice, just because it´s possible

Ebay is your friend... sometimes.

I picked up a 3800+ EE SFF (35Watt 2.0Ghz) off of ebay... twice. First one was damaged in transit.

Although zxdavb has already suggested as much, its worth noting that the watts we're citing are only a measure of the heat the chip produces -- not necessarily that firmly connected to how much power they draw. Keep in mind there is a limit to how much power the MSS can supply to the processor and remain stable.

I found a German shop that has BE-2300 in stock for €50.50.
(New for €50,50 and returned but OK for €47,90)
http://www.computeruniverse.net/default_english.asp

I did the BIOS "hacking" tonight and all went well, just have to wait for the cpu to arrive.

Exellent tutorial!

OK, I recived the BE-2300 cpu today and it´s now installed.
Everything went well.... One odd thing happend, MSS did a rebalance of the storeage and suddenly the MSS did a reboot. I don´t know why, temp was fine 42-49C while Balancing storage.

I will have the MSS runnig over night and see if it happends again.
