Just wanted to say I'm another happy 6850e customer here. Did the 4GB upgrade a couple of weeks ago and the CPU this morning (CPU was an eBay unit from Shanghai). Performance rocks, and I can finally stream to the Plex app on my tablet from other locations not no studder. Exactly what I was looking for!

If anyone is interested in an ADD 35w AMD X2 3800+ chip, this Ebay seller is listing 2 of them as a 'Buy It Now' for only $10.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Athlon-64-X2-3800-2-GHz-Dual-Core-ADD3800IAA5CU-Processor?item=270994808177

I picked up one for that price to move my MSS to dual core.

I picked up the other 2 that were available today thanks for posting about their availability. I spend so much time looking for them that I gave up a year ago because most sellers want way too much money for them because they are somewhat hard to find. So now I have a collection of BE2300 and now these to use.

Yes indeed, they are just ridiculously priced for what they are. I've seen them selling for $60+, and in fact missed out on an auction on one by $1 (ended at $25 shipped). It wasn't a necessity for me since I still have an LE-1640, but for only $10, it was clearly a seller who didn't know what their little 35w chips could bring when the supply was low and the WHS owner's demand still somewhat high.

Glad you snagged them, comp !! Hope you can find use for both and also that we really do get an ADD chip, not an ADO or otherwise. Looks like you and I may be doing a CPU upgrade in the very near future.

Once they arrive and I verify they are correct with no bent pins I will be poping them in the unit I have at the house for testing. The unit I have currently has a BE2300 which works well but I have 2 EX470's and it will be nice to have 3800+'s in them and with Alex's Fan Speed ADD-IN to help keep thing cool and running well you can't go wrong.

OK, Comp ... I just upgraded my EX470, now its your turn (if you haven't already). Since I had so much practice pulling apart a WHS after my recent Ebay purchase that went south on me, this was a walk in the park.

Obligatory screen snip of the CPU-Z utility reporting the X2:
Image

WHS Resources tab showing the X2 3800:

And finally the HP hardware tab showing temps:

With a fresh coat of Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste, I expect those temps to drop a smidge once it creates a better seal. So I now have the original Sempron and the 1640-LE chip collecting dust. The real test is tonight when the WHS starts its backups. The 1640 ran fine until that time, and it would then shut off due to thermal issues, so I'm hoping the X2 3800+ passes the test.

I installed the 2 3800+ processors last week and both EX470's are running well. One EX470 is running the Stock HP 1.x Software the other 3.x. I have been running all EX470's with Alexs Fan Speed Control Add-In to help keep things on the cool side. If your not running this ADD-IN you may want to download it and install it to help keep the server cool. The other processors I have run in EX470's is the BE2300 which I have used in many builds as well.

I hope you have great success with the 3800+ as many have reported having in the past. Once again I have to thank you for pointing their availability out and if they had more of them I would of purchased more and whats strange is the same seller was selling BE2300 at a much higher price than the 3800.

Done way back when my 1640 was giving me heat issues. The backups completed successfully and the temps are stable, so I'm a very happy owner of this chip in my MSS. It really does wake this server up, and the sluggish behavior of the original Sempron chip is a thing of teh past now.

I couldn't believe that the seller had them listed for that price, and I briefly thought about buying all 3, but I moreso enjoy helping out fellow MSS owners, and I'm glad you of all people got the remaining 2 chips.

I actually stopped looking for them because someone in Hong Kong was selling one at a time for too much money probably to get the best bang for his dollar and then there would be long periods before another might show up so I moved on to other things not quite related to the topic of this thread.

Great to hear everyone is happy with their upgrades.

I, on the other hand, am having a problem with stability on my box with the 'holy grail' 4200+ 35w cpu. Not trying to thread cap or anything, but wondering if anyone has a stock cpu they're not using or another known working CPU.

I'm not sure if it's the CPU or the RAM (or even more scary if it's the chipset). I bought this MSS from another user and it seems to turn off or reset occasionally during large file transfers and more commonly (basically every time) I try to run VM's on virtual box. CPU temps are never above 54C (usually idle around 35C) with Arctic Silver paste and the MSS fan addin running optimal. Northbridge temps on the other hand are usually around 57-62C. It also has upgrade 2GB G-skill memory. The previous owner reported occasional restarts during bootup. I have not had that issue. I'm starting to think it's been a "lemon" from the start...but have no way of testing it... as the only amd cpu i have in the house is the 4850e 45watt.

Thanks in advance. :whs:

I have a few AMD Sempron processors here one I just actually pulled from my longest running EX470 which I was fortunate enough to upgrade to a 3800+ send me a PM with an offer but you can also find them on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Sempron-340 ... 19b99132d2.

If you do opt to change out the processor I would take the time to break down the entire enclosure removing the back plastic backing is necessary because of the amount of dirt that can build up in that area even though from the outside it appears clean it may not be the case. I would clean everything including the PSU Internals and I would also verify the case & PSU Fans are in good working order. If everything is clean and the fans are working properly and you still experience random shut downs I would consider changing the PSU out.

Are you suggesting to leave the back plastic backing off the unit? (i.e. not put it back during re-assembly) I tore the unit down and reapplied paste to the cpu and NB but was unable to remove the back grill on the unit. I'm not sure how it comes off. Any hints/tips?

It sounds like you've replaced a few CPU's on theses ex470's. In your experience, should i just get an updated CPU (skip the stock one)? Are they just as reliable as stock CPU's?

No I am not suggesting leaving the back plastic panel off but to remove it to clean the area between the metal frame and the plastic panel because of the accumulation of dirt that can build up in that area causing a restriction of air flow.

To actually remove the panels you need to dissassemble the entire server. The side panels have a single clip that you need to push from inside the drive cage and the back panel slides up just like the top panel sliding forward only the back panel can not be properly removed with the motherboard/PSU Assy in the unit because the PSU goes through the actual panel.

I have swapped out more processors than I can count over the years in the EX470 and its not something I actually enjoy doing. It takes abit of finess to remove the heat sink, after you back out the screws then a slight twist of the heat sink and gently prying will safely remove the heat sink without the processor comming out still attached to the heat sink which is something you never want to happen.

There are very few processors which are known to work well with the EX470 and if you scan through this thread you will find them listed many times over and probably not easy to find. The only benifit in installing the original processor is to rule out any issues your seeing with the current processor and if you see the same thing then I would look at the PSU.

I'm having problems with my CPU upgrade and I'm trying to determine if it's the cpu itself.

I'm running and EX470 2gig ram with modded bios.
cpu is an ADD4200IAA5DO 4200+

I just received this cpu and the symptoms are 20-30 seconds after startup, the system abruptly shuts down.
During the brief bootup, the bootup screen correctly displays the CPU as a dual core 4200+
If I'm in the bios, the sytem will run forever. Temps are normal (cpu 44C)and remain so even after 5 or more minutes.
I thought it might have been the power supply so I grabbed an old 500 watt PC PS and modded the connector but I get the same problem, system shutdown after 20-30 seconds. BTW, the modded PS works fine with the original cpu.

Question is do I have a bad cpu or is this an indication of an incorrectly modded bios?

Opinions? Suggestions?

Cheers

Ron

Yes, you cannot use the ADD version of the 4200 too many watts, you must use the 35 watt version which if memory servers me correctly is an ADH version.
