Hello all,

My EX470 PSU died and it was off-line for ~2.5 months before I got a replacement PSU. Now it powers up but doesn't boot.

I have a hard time to figure out what health code is actually displayed.

Perhaps it has problem with BIOS settings? Or does it look to you that it needs recovery on system drive? I ejected the other drives, same problem. All drives were healthy to my knowledge before PSU went out.

Link to video (sorry for bad quality and that link is not working, new users are not allowed to post links...)

EDIT: If I wait, it powers down automatically after around 90 secs.

Please advice.

Thank you

/Bjorn

Hi Lefty44 welcome to the forums!

I am not sure where you got the PSU from but the HP MediaSmart Servers use a proprietary PSU. http://www.mediasmartserver.net/wiki/in ... wer_Supply

That aside I recommend you disconnect all your drives from the server both internal and external along with any externally connected devices from your server then turn it on. If your server is working properly it will boot into its recovery mode which is evident by the health light blinking Purple/Red and then if you logon to your router and check the DHCP listing you should see a device starting with the name MININT followed by other things. If you see this then its a good sign if not then there is a hardware issue to be troubleshot.

If the servers health light is solid red then you will need to press the Status/Reset Button to obtain a health blink code: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/wiki/in ... rror_Codes

If the server shuts itself off as you describe then I would question the PSU but also I would make certain the FANS are working. When you first turn the server on you will hear the fans spin at full speed for a brief moment then slow down this occurs during the BIOS Boot Post. Its these moments which make having a headless server very difficult to troubleshoot but if you want video then you will need to purchase a DEBUG Board like the one in the following link: viewtopic.php?t=8066

Do not bother trying a USB-VGA connection to provide video as it will not work during the boot process and only becomes active once WHS fully boots.

First of all, thank you for your answer! Second, sorry for late reply, haven't got a chance to dig deeper until now.

I think I did my homework on the propitiatory PSU and ordered a OverTek "HP storage works Data Vault X510 X500 Power supply PSU 300W - BRAND NEW" from Ebay.

But, I did disassemble my EX470 and checked all the cables, everything looked normal. I reseated RAM etc. After assembly it booted just fine! However, after 5 mins it just died, like power cord was pulled. When I started it again, it start booting (I did not get that far at my first post) and died again.

Now it is up and running for 20 mins, does not feel stable though... Cannot find any clues in event logs, all looks fine there. I have a SMART WHS-addin, all disks OK. Can't verify both fans right now, backing up photos. But it sounds like both are running.

Probably there is something with new PSU or power regulator on main board. Do you have any thought?

EDIT: All fans are running, temps OK. Pulled this out of the system:
