First off, thanks to the people who are apart of this site for all the previous discussion I was able to read through, it was very helpful!

I purchased an open box ex490 last night on new egg for 300 bucks, and am about to take my first stab at the media server world.

My goal is to have a central spot for all my music(possibly have my itunes library find music on this server), HD movies, and photos that I can access from my Logitech Google Revue, Macbook Pro, Bedroom TV(yet to be purchased), Kitchen TV(yet to be Purchased) and guest Windows Laptops. I am most concerned about accessing this locally, but remotely would be cool if it's not to much trouble.

Id also l ike to use this server as a backup for my macbook. I just have the 1tb it came with, but plan on expanding this in the future when I figure out what case I need for the internal drive I buy.

I will also be running HomeSeer http://www.homeseer.com/products/pro_se ... O-2007.htm for home automation.

My questions are as follows:
1. Do I need a special WIFI router for this? I currently do not have one.
2. Is the stock ex490 going have enough power to run home automation, and stream music/movies/pictures to two Computers? ( I have read many articles saying this can easily be done, but don't want to throw money at a problem that might not even exist)
3. What other things can I utilize this home server for? I want to put this baby to work and get the most out of it as possible!
4. When placing music/movies/pictures on the server, is there a best format for each so that I dont have 1000 different formats for each media type?
5. Any tips for a noob? I haven't opened up a computer for building/upgrades in almost 5 years...

Thanks so much for any responses! I will continue to search this forum for the answer to my questions.

1. - No. You will probably want to ensure that the router you use supports UPnP for automatically opening the required ports for remote access but it can also be done manually.
2. - Depends. It's possible that you'll want to upgrade it to a dual core processor if it begins to bog down under the load you put on it.
3. - Host a web site?
4. - Check out the posts in the Media Streaming forum. dbone1026 is the resident expert
5. - Have fun and come back often. Help others when you are able.

Thanks again for the response. Here is the router I have come up with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 7AV-100NAS

Does anyone have experience with this router, or prefer a different one? It looks like this should have enough power for what I need to stream. Is it overkill though? Thanks!

I use this router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124296

I actually have 2 of the Linksys routers and a timecapsule to provide full coverage through the house and they are connected via gigabit ethernet.

I've been disappointed in the ability of the EX495 I have to function as an effective file server or media source in my Mac environment. It's one PITA after another to get things to work and some just don't.

1. "special router", no but a simultaneous dual band would be nice
2. I'm not convinced it does, but then I've never succeded in getting much/full use out of it yet.
3. I have a hard enough time just getting it to work as a reasonable file server. As a place to store backups (time machine or otherwise) it works fine as it doesn't matter much that it is very slow. (My EX495 has an upgraded CPU and more RAM and it still stinks for transfer speed).
4. I've not had much success using it as a server so I've never worried about formats.
5. Use the search function here to find answers to your questions.
