Cliff you were on the money, the HP disk service had stopped and a simple restart of the service from the System Preferences got her up and running again.

For over a month I have been unable to backup to my MediaSmart via Time Machine (Snow Leopard 10.6.4). I can't start the Time Machine backup location after creating it in the MediaSmart control applet on the Mac. I have called HP repeatedly and they've been of no help. The problem appears to correlate with Apple Security Update 2010-005, but perhaps may not be widespread. Anyone else having issues? |

I am still trying to resolve this problem. Can anyone offer advice? I have a second Macbook on my network that backs up fine. On the problem Macbook, the image creates fine but the backup location won't start in the HP Applet, therefore it is unavailable to Time Machine. I have tried the following: Reset user accounts and permissions on the Macbook / MSS Recreated the /MAC share on the MSS Tried alternate user accounts Disabled OSX firewall Uninstalled / reinstalled MSS software on the Macbook From the system.log: hpVDProxy[56]: I: virtual disk manager setting up VD data provider hpVDProxy[56]: I: virtual disk manager seting up disk channel hpVDProxy[56]: F: Failed creation virtual disk device interface hpVDProxy[56]: I: virtual disk manager could not communicate VD driver hpVDProxy[56]: I: virtual disk manager could not setup - waiting 30 seconds |

I haven't had this problem, and I have two Macs backing up to my WHS. They are both running 10.6.4 and they are current with all updates. I had one of my TM disks become corrupt, but other than getting over having to blow it away and start fresh, the process of replacing it went without a hitch. Are there any entries in the server-side logs when you attempt to start the disk from the client? |

Cliff, did Time Machine indicate the disks became corrupt? My wife's Macbook hasn't backed up in a while, claims to not find backup disk even though we can browse to it. I've been meaning to look into it but haven't gotten to it yet. If I find a solution I'll be sure to share. |

That should be all you need to do. |

Are you booting into the 64 bit kernel on that Macbook? If you don't know, then the answer is likely no as the default is 32 bit and it's a bit of work to change that default behavior. Also, what version is your MSS connector software? You should be on 3.0.2b120. |

My limited experience with HP support has not been positive and their support of OS X is at best uneven (my experience had to do with discrepancies in scan output between Windows and OS X scanning applications that were supplied with an HP all-in-one printer). That said, the need for 3rd party vendors to recompile 32 bit kexts is the reason why Apple defaults all non-Server OS X installs to 32 bit and this was discussed fairly widely when Snow Leopard was released. If a user makes a technical change to their environment like this one, it is incumbent on them to understand the implications of the change. edit: FWIW, this support article discusses 64 bit kernel FAQs.

Borrow this thread... I just bought an iMac 27" i7 (2010) and I can't find my X510 TimeMachine disk. I have used my MacBook for about two years now so there is a TM disk working in my X510. When I look in my system info for my iMac I see a lot of HP stuff running in 64 bit mode. How and what program/system should I force to 32 bit? Regards Tommy |
