Occasionally, I've had these periods where hpMSSagent pegs one of the cores on my machine for hours and hours at a time. I can't kill it as it just restrarts instantly and pegs the CPU again. Rebooting the whole machine also doesn't make a difference. Normally, it seems to go away after a few hours, but it's been going all day for me.

Any suggestions? It happens whether or not I'm on my home network or at work (where the HP is not available).

I'm running all of the latest updates on both my MSS (an ex490) and my mac (10.6.4) with the hp software.

I left the mac up and running all night and I'm still getting a pegged CPU by the hpMSSagent.

Here is the output from top -u as of 8:35 this morning:

Code:
PID    COMMAND      %CPU TIME     #TH  #WQ  #POR #MREG RPRVT  RSHRD  RSIZE  VPRVT  VSIZE  PGRP
2019   hpMSSAgent   97.1 25:25:09 14/1 2    138  142   22M    24M    68M    98M    2494M  2019

I'm afraid my only suggestion is to try re-installing the Client software. Some quick research shows that ktrace is the Mac equivalent of truss or strace and may give an indication of what the process is doing if you're familiar with those tools.

Rebooting my mac fixed it this time, sometimes it doesn't do anything though.
