This is from the HP website. Should answer your question. More details can be found at-

How our Mac Restore Works
We have implemented a restore process where you can restore your data that has been backed up. We have not implemented a program where you can recover your Mac Operating System.
Restoring your Mac from a failed hard drive scenario will involve the following steps:
Install the new hard drive
Install Mac OS X 10.5 from the ”Mac OS X Install Disc”
Install Mac OS X operating system updates, to ensure everything is up-to-date
Install HP MediaSmart Server Mac Client software
Configure HP MediaSmart Server Mac Client settings including: server name, administrator password, backup location (using the same share that was used for the backup) and enable backup disk
Choose the disk called ”Backup to the HP MediaSmart Server” disk in the Time Machine System Preferences
Launch Time Machine and ask to restore to the latest backup

tx for that,
I got a little scared about this ...

" 6. A pop up warning will appear informing you the file already exists, and that continuing will erase their existing backup data and start over. To continue with the new size click Delete and Continue . "

so I decided to call HP tech support (very nice by the way) and I may be screwed, the guy told me that , to my shock, that my new mac will not recognize the file name since its a different mac, what the hell is the point of a backup when your mac or pc dies?

He did not give up and said he will try a work around for me.

ALL GOOD NOW!
HOORAH! tech guy called back, told me to just rename my backup and .iso instead of macbackup and double click which mounted it onto my desktop ! very cool!

Well, there is a simpler way. The backup file name is just a serial number of your Mac, so if you changed the hardware and so serial number is different, you can rename the .macbackup file on the server with new serial number, which can be read in the system about box. As a result you will be able to use previous backups history (and continue it, actually).

However, please, note that if the hardware is changed something in backing up data also might differ, so there is a risk that not everything will be allowed to restore - just in case.

I jumped the gun,

cannot locate any of my important files, there are empty directories everywhere, sure there are some things in the latest backup in my documetns, but nothing in my library, this really sucks

will the serial number make a difference ? or was my backup screwed from the beginning?

something got to be messed , there is supposed to be 256GB in the backup file!

Are you trying to work with TM base manually? It's not a good idea I'd say.
