Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me with this problem. Just received my 485 MSS. I added two WD 2 TB drives right from the start. Also upgraded the server and clients to 2.5, both Mac and Windows. Everything seems to be working great except the Mac backup. The server share shows up fine on the Mac for normal file sharing. When I try and use the Time machine capability is when I have a problem. I start the control panel, am able to authenticate, and am able to create a backup disk. However, when it finishes creating the backup disk, it shows up in "stop" mode and nothing happens when I press the Start button. As a result the disk doesn't show up in Time Machine. On the MSS, the file is there that was created so I am assuming the creation process worked fin. Any suggestions?

Thanks...David

Is there anything hp-related in the Console logs, especially system.log? Have you tried to reboot both MSS and Mac (in this order) - sometimes this helps?

I certainly have rebooted unisntalled, reinstalled several times, insequence, and that didn't seem to make a difference.

Good suggestion on looking at the logs. Unfortunately I don't know enough to deciper these, but it seems to be pointing to an error. Here are some excerpts from this eve when I tried to connect and start the backup disk. There are 4 logs that seemed relevant on the Mac; Windows Server log;SMDB log, NMDB log, and the Systems log.

Have you tried turning on your guest account and giving it access to the Mac folder? Does your username and password match exactly from your MBP and your WHS account that has access to that folder? Seems to me I had an issue with mounting the drive after I first created it a while ago and it was a login error. In other words the server was not letting my MBP access the Time Machine partition. Just thought I'd see if that gets you anywhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have turned on guest account with access to the MAC folder. Have also checked logon and pws and they are identical. MBP logon name has a space in it. I'm wondering if that might be the issue.

Provided logs seems don't have anything related to hp (usually what I observed was hpVDProxy). Just try to launch /Applications/Utilities/Console.app and use file "hp" in search field - you find everything needed.

I don't have Guest account enabled - therefore it does not matter I think. The account with space also seems is not an issue, because you were able to authenticate and create backup. So my suggestion is to continue investigating logs more accurately - find all "hp" as I described above and post it here, then we can continue.

Thanks. Nothing in the log when I search for "HP". I contacted HP support. They were puzzled and asked forcomplete console log and system properties. Have not heard anything back.

I've reread your initial post and got though that probably backup image was prepared with errors. Did you try to recreate it? Just delete existed one and create a new, might be with different size. Keep Console.app opened, just in case - to see anything related, if something happened. Actually when the backup image is created and prepared correctly it should be mounted(started) automatically, so if you observed "stopped" state something went wrong then.

I have deleted and re-created the backup drive through the Mac Mediasmart client many times. Have varied the size, rebooted, etc, all to no avail. It looks like it created the backup disk successfully. When I authenticate it, it finds it but will not start, with no explanation or anything obvious in the logs to tell me. The HP support team got back to me today and acknowledged that the problem exists. Not sure what that means. They are still investigating a solution. Pretty frustrating. Seems to work so well for the rest of the world.

Hmm... I don't believe in ghosts... could you please post/attach here you system.log file (/var/log/system.log)? I would try to figure out what's going on there. BTW it also might be helpful to review the EventLog on the server, probably there will be something there.

I have had the same problem a while back. I ended up reinstalling OSX and this fixed the issue. Before I bought my 485, I had done the hack that would allow a networked drive show up as Time Machine. Don't know if this had anything to do with it, but reinstall OSX fixed everything. All you have to do is backup your user folder to another drive, and reinstall OSX. Then just copy your folder back to the Mac, and it should restore your settings. My brother is a Mac Genius for Apple and helped me getting the system back to normal.

Thanks for suggestions. Never heard back from HP support with a fix, but they did identify it was probably an issue in the MAC OS on my machine. So, the idea of reloading the MAC OS was probably what was next for me. Fortunately, with Snow Leapoard on its way, I decided to wait for that. Did the upgrade this past weekend and problem solved. Backup disk now starts, Time Machine sees it, and all works as advertised.
