I've been streaming movies from my ex470 to my popcorn hour for some time now and I decided to upgrade my media player to a mac mini running Boxee. The mac mini can see my mss when I browse for networks both through the mac itself (can't remember the name of the utility) and through the Boxee app, but then it either says failure to load content or no content found. Is it not possible to connect an older generation mediasmart to a mac?

Is the Mediasmart showing up in the Finder on the Mini? The Mediasmart should be showing up there, and you should be able to click on it and then click on the "connect as" button and log in with a valid login and password (keep it in your keychain is probably a good idea too).

I don't know what kind of file transfers Boxee supports, it would have to have support on the Mini for connecting and doing file transfers over SMB to work correctly with a box running WHS. You should also try other apps such as PLEX which I believe does work when the files reside on a WHS.

It does show up in finder. Didn't try the connect as. That makes sense since it never asked for a password. I'll give it a try. Thank you.

I use Plex on my Mac Mini to stream media (mkv/m2ts) from my EX470. No problems at all.

Correct in that you have to first authenticate against the SMB share using Connect As. You can save it in your keyring and then it'll auto login after that. I also automount my media share on startup (in the Accounts control panel under Login Items) so that the share is mounted on startup.

John, just out of curiosity can Plex stream AVI's? I currently use two Apple TV's to stream from iTunes on my 470 but, the catch is when I dump things into iTunes I usually need to convert the AVI's into MP4's or MK4's. I was just trying to avoid the whole conversion process.

Thanks

Marc,

I'll have to check when I get home tonight. When you say AVI, do you mean divx in an AVI container? I think those are the only avi files I actually have.

Yep, that is exactly what I mean. I am curious about that one.

On a side note, I see you have a Rosewill Sata enclosure. I am getting one delivered today. I look forward to adding even more storage to my WHS.

Marc,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I kind of forgot....

Anyway, Plex played avi/divx just fine. Looks pretty good, actually. Plex's upscaling works nicely.

How's your Rosewill treating you?

John

Thanks John. I may have to give that software a go and play around with it a bit.

I like the Rosewill. Good cheap storage space.

:offtopic: Are you able to use ALL FIVE bays on the Rosewill or just four?

Unfortunately only 4. The 470 won't even recognize the 5th bay as a non-joined drive.

That is my understanding as well. The 47X's can only see 4. I believe the 48X's can only see one. I believe they can not use a eSata port multiplier. At least one benefit of being an early adopter. I only have three in use right now so it is a non-issue for me right now. It is hard to beat though for the price. I got it with a 1 TB drive for $209. So far I am really happy with it.

I asked because there is at least one multi-bay eSATA enclosure where the 5th bay is actually recognized and functional.

That is interesting. I may have to borrow a couple of drives and see what happens. Right now I only have three in there but, eventually, I will need more. I am assuming the fifth will not work. I thought I read that somewhere but it will definitely be worth trying. I will let you know if I find out anything different. Thanks for the info.

Hi Marc,

Is it true that you have 5,5 tb in yout ex475? Because it says that 4 tb is all that you can have. Is that wrong?
