Post subject:  Cannot access WHS
So my WHS machine (an HP MediaSmart EX495) has been sitting idle in the basement for a while, but I decided I want to revive it. Mainly I want to retrieve a bunch of old digital photos. Our house is largely Mac based, except for my son's gaming rig. I went to System Prefs on my MBP, where I used to access the WHS. I click the HP icon but get an error saying that, "System Prefs must quit and reopen."

I can quit and reopen several times but this continues to happen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the HP Mediasmart client. Still cant access. Any ideas...

If the files you want to access are in a time machine backup hosted on the server, then you are pretty much hosed. The kext HP wrote to support that feature with WHS ceased to function starting with OS X 10.7 and since HP discontinued the MediaSmart Server they have not updated their software to work with later OS X releases.

If the files are just stored on one of the server drives then just mount it as a SMB share and copy them off to a local drive. Don't worry about running the preferences applet as it exists solely for time machine support.
