I've connected my HP EX490 to my iMac via a gigabit switch (ethernet setup using self-assigned IP). Since I don't want the WHS on the primary network (don't need a server, but drive extender makes for a great storage drive), this setup works great. Only problem is that I can't get to the Home Server Console. I can navigate to the WHS no problem via finder, but entering the server name in the Remote Desktop Connection window returns "cannot connect" error. I can't seem to track down the WHS IP either, so perhaps there's something else going on that I don't know about.

What happens if you try to connect to the server via "GO" and "Connect to Server" from the Finder? Does it recognize the server name there?
I also have an iPhone app called iNet that's great for tracking down the IP address of anything on my home network. You should try to locate the IP address and then simply type the IP address into the RDC connection window instead of the server name and see if that works.
