I have been using Time Machine with my EX470, with the v2.5 Mac client (my EX470 has the 3.0 software upgrade, but the 3.0 client always gave 'validation error' when trying to connect), and it all seemed fine. Now I want to restore from this backup, but to a different Mac. I have installed OS X and the v2.5 HP MSS client again, but when I connect, it says the backup is not available - how can I restore from the existing .macbackup file?

I know what you are trying to do but with the server the migration process don't work right. I found that the way to go is get an external drive and set up TM on the other Mac and then get the .macbackup file from the server and copy it to the hard drive. That worked fine for me. I think the problem is that the server records some kind of unique identifier form the computer to protect your backup from being use on another system. hope this helps.

Hopefully you still have access to the old Mac. If it is working, I assume, then use Apple's Migration Assistant to copy the files over.

Hook the two macs up with a firewire cable, start up the old one in Target Disk Mode, and use Migration Assistant on the new mac to move everything over. Applications and all.
