The embargo was just lifted on the new LX195 server, you can read my announcement blog post and be sure to leave your feedback and questions for an upcoming review.

Some friends and I were talking about this product. I think at it's current price point (being a little as (only) $60 cheaper than the 485 is offered) of $399 it is not a well thought out product. Used 470 servers are going for less than $400 with decent storage space included.

I'm not down on the LX195, only saying that price is ALWAYS a determing factor, in fact usually a KEY determining factor in the success of a new product and I think HP has woefully missed the target on this one.

If the LX195 were in the $200 range and I had a handful of existing USB drives laying around... then I think this would be a great way for someone wanting to make better use of their existing USB drives, stream media, do scheduled backups etc... to get into the WHS world. In short... at or about $200 this product could fill a niche and be a winner.

Just my 2 cents.... but the price is a total downer.

Rumors are that this under power system is going to support 2.5 OS. And somehow this unit is able to do what a 475 can't do even though the 475 is way more powerful then then the LX195.

So if the LX195 is can run 2.5 then the 475 should be able to run 2.5 as well!

I'm always interested in hearing rumors, where'd this one come from? :)

The rumor is from a someone who saw a bata system last month and said it was running 2.5 on it when he saw it.

May not be version they ship but it was tested with 2.5.

Just scoot over to wegotserved and you will read the production unit ships with version 2.1.
I am sure you will be able to upgrade to 2.5, if not automatically the manually. I completely agree that the HP statement of the EX47x not being able to work with software version 2.5 is BS. Kudos to Cougar and Yakuza (who has greatfully become a HP hacker  ) who were able to reverse-engineer the software so that the EX47x people can load it as well.

But look at that: My EX485 uses 1.0GB of memory with the 2.5 update (and a few almost required add-ins: Avast, Diskeeper, Toolkit, TaskViewer, Admin Console, Diskmanagement, Whiist). So if you really follow HP's logic, the LX195 is "underpowered" to run 2.5 without modifications.

I have the EX470-2.5 :) from what I read, the LX195 has 2.1 but was told that it will not upgrade to 2.5. The LX195 doesn't have the power to run the transcoding software. Maybe someone can confirm.

I think this machine is a bust.

Since HP wanted to go the route, like the EX48x using the EX47x chassis, they should have used the MV2120 chassis, that would give them 2 internal drives, probably 2 usb.

Now that would have looked sweet, a small footprint. :beerme:

Also HP should use the EX47x case for a port multiplier case.

I completely agree with Diehard.
I almost forgot about the Mediavault formfactors.
And guess what: HP is blowing them out on their website, discounting them heavily (below $200). Granted, there is only a 500GB drive installed and a cheaper Marvell architecture. But $400 for a unit that you can only expand unasthetically though a bunch of external USB HDDs? We should start tracking the days when the first discounts show up on that unit.
Cheers.
