Must be early in the morning because I did miss your early posts. If you are worried about out of sync updates as being a possible cause just go to add and remove programs and start uninstalling the updates in sequence back to pp1. There we only 21 fixes applied since 11/4/08 when PP1 installed on my machine plus the services packs for net 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5.

Back atcha, Cougar !! Just for reference, here's my Resources tab info showing versions of the software installed:

http://www.wtslair.com/HPServer/mss.jpg

erail, I've been following your efforts to get that X2 chip working, and I'd entertained thoughts of trying it myself, but I settled on the 1640 just because I needed it to be bulletproof, so I'm very satisfied with my setup so far. I've gotta decide whether a 1tb will do for the next upgrade, but I'd like to hold out until the 2tb drives are just a bit lower in price.

WalkinTarget, I have pretty much stopped all efforts and settled with the 3800 EE SFF which has been totally bullet proof for the last 6 months. I have 2 MSS both running 3800 chips and the fans on the northbridge and couldn't be happier with both performance and maintenance. PP2 for me, went really well but I was a little disappointed with the MCE/WHS integration as I had to do a little regedit on my vista machines. I'm surprised you're having problems getting updated to PP2, because I do a lot of weird things with my machines and so far have been good with updates. I also install all windows 2003 server updates which is a no-no and haven't been bit by anything.

No Joy, still cannot get remote access to work. As an additional note, I haven't changed any firewall settings on anything unless PP2 changes them

After examining my WU log, I'm seeing dozens of these:

WARNING: Shell_NotifyIcon failed (dwMessage=0x0, uFlags=0x3, hr=0x80070002)

Googling that, it appears to be a Windows Update service issue, but I am able to do a Windows Update via remote desktop on the WHS, so I'm somewhat perplexed why the warning are in the logs when I can get Windows Updates to work properly.

I'm just throwing this out there as something to consider. I don't know if anyone having problems installed a pre-PP2 update but I know when PP1 came out Windows Update wouldn't find PP1 until I uninstalled the pre-PP1 update. Again, I'm not sure if this would apply but I wanted to throw it out there as I spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out why PP1 wouldn't install.

OK, Cougar is having me uninstall PP1, but in looking at my Add/Remove list, I see nothing listed as such. I'll go out on a limb and guess the name of the installer is 'Windows Home Server Power Pack 1'. No such listing that I see on my Add/Remove list. The HPMSS-1.3-R1 update is there, but nothing relating to PP1 that I see.

You're right about the title of the PP1 update. The KB number for PP1 is KB944289. Quite strange that it's not listed. I don't guess that you have the pre-PP1 update installed? That was made available to people that wanted to ensure the data corruption bug was fixed.

Might explain why PP2 won't install because one of the prereqs is PP1 formal release. My machines clearly show PP1 and PP2 with the dates of install. Good catch TxDot. Now the question becomes why doesn't PP1 show as installed.

I forgot to mention that I did not dabble at ALL with any of the pre-release PP1 installers, as I much prefer to wait until the update was final from MS. So scratch any thoughts of leftover pre-release PP1 stuff that might have gotten loaded.

Might be a basic thing but did you "check" the Show updates box in the Add/Remove Programs listing? Windows updates won't show unless that is checked.

I use a program called ccleaner, I set it to delete hotfixes hidden files, this deletes PP2 uninstaller, and it won't show up under Installed Applications with the show updates ticked. Maybe you have deleted the hotfix uninstall for PP1.

Unbelievable !! I ended up going through the entire installed software list (show updates checked) and I found this:

'Pre-release Microsoft Windows Home Server Power Pack 1'

I am absolutely certain that I did not intentionally load this on my MSS, and the only thing I can figure is that I picked it up as a link to the RC PP1, but it was in fact someone's older link to PP1 pre-release. Damn .... I'm coming up fast on 41 yrs old, but not knowing or remembering that I did this really has me feeling stupid. Sorry to bug you guys when the answer wasn't what I expected.

Cougar, for your help and diligence, expect a contribution to be made for your efforts.

I knew what you were describing sounded familiar. Did the Automatic Updates work to get PP1 and PP2?

BTW, I've got 10 years on you and it doesn't get any better. I'm just glad I can remember anything.
