All of a sudden my 485 starting throwing
"The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period."
error and becomes unresponsive.
I reboot the server and it stays ok for some time and same thing happens after a while.

I updated to 3.0 when it came out and I added 2 2TB drives long time ago. Other than that no changes to the server.

Not sure what the fix is? ](*,) or who to find the root cause.

One of the things I want to try is running boot-time chkdsk and view the results.

How do I see the boot screen? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Try the WHS SMART Add-In, that may show drive issues. To access the boot screens you need the debug cable from cakalapati.

Thank you Alex.
Home Server SMART did the trick.

It is displaying 2 warnings.
1. Pending Bad Sectors Detected.
2. Disk Health: Warning. The health of this disk is questionable. It is recommended that you keep a close eye on it.
If its health degrades further you should replace it.

This is on the system drive. Looks like I need to replace it.

Thanks Again!

You may also want to look into msconfig (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docu ... x?mfr=true) to troubleshoot start-up problems. You should be able to use it to configure some sort of console logging.

Okay, my disk finally gave up. Will WHS will not boot any more.

When I started seeing trouble I managed to remove all data from primary disk (D Drive) except for 20GB system stuff.

What is the best way to bring my WHS online again?

1. Replace system drive with new hard dirve
2. Insert the HP 3.0 system recovery disk on my home computer and run the system restore?

That should be it right. Will doing this keep all my data on the other three drives?
I have about 2TB, call me dumb but I don't have a backup of that. Was on my list to do but never got to it.

Thanks

Yes. Just make sure you select SERVER RECOVERY as that will preserve your data. DO NOT select FACTORY RECOVERY or it will format your drives and you will lose your data.

After the recovery make certain you obtain all the HP and Microsoft Updates and ignore any Alerts telling you your Client Database is corrupt and needs to be repaired. After you finish getting all the updates that alert will go away. If you repair that database before getting all the updates you will lose your client database.

I purchased WD black 500GB hard drive (WD5001AALS).
Formatted (NTFS) on my widows xp workstation and tried system recovery.

The recovery is sitting like this (screenshot attached) for more than couple hours.

Should I cancel and try again?

Thanks

Update:
I finally got it working. I cancelled out of this and used another computer to install from and everything worked fine.
Thanks
