Hey all --

-------

TL;DR version: I bought a replacement PSU for my EX485. I tried in 'test mode' (without screwing down all the panels and what-not) it once and it worked. I reassembled my EX485 and now it doesn't work. The original PSU still works. Could I have broken something on the new PSU just by pushing the wires around? How do I properly test this new PSU to see if it is outputting the correct voltage?

-------

I bought a replacement PSU for my EX485.

When I power up on the HP/factory PSU with no HDDs installed, the lights come on, but the status light flashes red briefly, then goes what appears to be a bright blue, almost white (not the 'lazy blue' of the normal lights) and stays steady. I'm assuming this is 'normal' behavior.

The replacement PSU will power up briefly, with lights on, then shutdown and 'try again', this time staying on, again, with lights on, but it doesn't do the flashing red ... instead, it goes straight to the bright blue/white.

Now, when I first got the PSU, I tested it with all drives installed and fully inside the case, but I hadn't installed all the screws since I was simply testing it. It appeared to work fine -- I logged into it and everything. so, happy with its performance, I disassembled it and put it back together with all the screws -- while doing so, I twisted the PSU cable/loom around so it would better fit and lay down better (a bit of turning and 'smooshing'). I go to turn it back on again, and I get the behavior I described in paragraph two, above.

I've gone back to the original PSU and all works fine.

So, did something break when I was turning and 'smooshing' the PSU wire/loom? how do I test this bugger to see if I'm getting the right voltages out?

I'm frustrated. :(

Brad

Here is a link to the sites WIKI where you can review the PSU pin outs.

So if I 'hot wire' the power pin, don't I need to put some sort of load on the PSU to not break it? I've always been told that during PSU testing you had to provide a load so that it wouldn't ruin the PSU...

Its only for a short period of time and will do no harm to the PSU. Just make certain that you have identified the correct pins before shorting them to turn the PSU on. You may want to also connect the PSU to a power strip so you can the power strip to turn the power on and off as well.
