One of my PCs has a E5200 SLAY7 processor, and I was thinking of upgrading it (Or going to new MB and i5) and using the old processor in my HP485.

Right now I only use the MSS for Back ups, MYMOVIES to HTPC, and as I- tunes Server (not often, cause Media collector keeps hanging)

I plan to add a new HTPC or other Media Box, but do not plan any ripping/ encoding/converting activities.

I have seen many articles about the How, but not as many about the performance gains for light users.

I would lap the HS, and maybe add a Fan, but did not plan on trying to OC, or add more memory.

Any advice (And even "how to" tips or caveats) appreciated.

Here is a link that may help answer your questions about installing the E5200 in your server => http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/03 ... d-mirrors/

Thank you for the link, I did read through it, but i am still not sure about the return on my time investment (Not to mention the potential frustration when it doesn't boot up the first few times), but it does seem the 5200 Slay7 is the most straight forward upgrade.

I was hoping in the nearly 1000 views include people who could post some of their experience (both installation and performance pro/con)

Does it make version 3.0 run better? (Again based on current and projected use, I am not sure I will be doing the software update any time soon)

Adam mentions "It will give you a 100% performance increase over the Celeron 440" but again, where? ( or everywhere?)

As I mentioned, I will not be doing significant processing on the MSS, but may be streaming MYMOVIES to 2 client PCs and possibly adding addition external an JBOD sansdigital box.

While I can not effectively comment on the E5200 upgrade what I would say is see what if any performance issues you may encounter with your current configuration. If you find its performance to be acceptable then maybe you can get buy for sometime before you maybe add other tasks to your server. Streaming movies to your PC's or other media devices does not require all that much resources from your server since its just going to make the files available and read them. The transcoding and players would not be handled by your server so it has less work to do. Now on the 3.0 if your looking to stream with its media streamer then its a different story and will put additional burden on your CPU.

What I can say about having a Duel Core Processor in your server is that it lessens the impact of Twonky, demigrator and QSM on your server. You may still feel some of their impact but not like on a single core CPU.

As for a Port Multiplier just know that your EX48x Servers eSATA port will only support or see 1 drive in a multibay port multiplier so your better off with a USB Port Multiplier from Sans Digital. Medasonic has them were they are both USB and eSATA so if one day you upgrade your server with one with better eSATA support you can use the eSATA connections there. I do like the Sans Digital Port Multipliers which are made by CFI and I use CFI Back Planes with good success.

Your return on investment would be great. I am so happy that I upgraded 485 with E5200. I also installed 4GB RAM to it.
