So I installed a video/keyboard/mouse cable, and the mss hasn't worked since then.

When I turn on the power now, the red light flashes 5 times, and then it flashes aqua, and it is waiting for a server recovery. I tried doing a recovery (the one that doesn't destroy any data), and it took a long time (like it should), but then it went back to the same flashing aqua light.

It seems like it doesn't see the hard drive any more - the lights for the 4 hard drive trays don't light up at all (I only have one drive, so it should light up for that one, right?)

To install the cable, I followed the directions over at http://www.myhomeserver.com/?page_id=10 The directions are pretty straight forward, I'm pretty sure I got everything back together correctly. I have even tried taking the cable and jumper back out. It still doesn't work, it just flashes the aqua light.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I hope I didn't kill my server.

I have installed 2 of these in my EX70's without issue and I know you have an EX485 but it should not matter the proceedure is the same.

When you had the cable connected were you able to see the servers boot posts? I guess we have to start there. Its impossible to plug the debug connector in wrong. If you had video and for some reason the MSS did not see the system drive it would go into recovery mode just as if you pressed the pin for recovery during the boot up.

Also I would check your system drive for issues. Plug it into another computer and run CHKDSK to see if its ok or not.

When you shut your server down how did you do it?

When I had the cable connected, I was able to see the BIOS, and then I was able to see windows booting (and starting the recovery mode).

I'll try looking at the drive in another machine.

To shut the machine down, I briefly pressed the button on the back and then waited for several minutes for it to shut down.

Dave after reading your post I think your issue is just the hard drive. You know the last hard drive that failed on me did so without any real warning. Worked fine one day and the next it was just locked up solid not to imply yours is.

Hopefully its just the hard drive and you can get it functioning again.

The hard drive is fine. I put it in a external enclosure, and it works just fine on another computer.

I put it back in the WHS, and it went back to wanting to do a server recovery.

I went into the BIOS, and set the boot order so that the hard drive is first (it was set where the internal USB drive was first). It now boots, but it still flashes red 5 times every time it boots.

According to the wiki, that error code means multiple boot failures. How do I figure out what those are?
