Hello all,

I have been reading a lot of good information on here. Everything looks good.

I was reading somewhere that Realtek gigabit ethernet drivers have been causing some problems with the server disconnecting.

I put in an ex487 for a small office building about 8 months ago and everything has worked great. One of their computers recently went bad and they had to replace the motherboard. The new motherboard came with the realtek onboard gigabit ethernet.

I've already tried a different router and the problem has not been solved. I sent some logs to an HP tech guy and he said everything looked good. He recommended to do a server recovery. I don't really want to go through all that hassle if I don't have to. The ex487 starting messing up like a few days after the new motherboard pc was back up and running.

It basically disconnects from the network. If I unplug the ex487 for a minute or 2 and then plug it back in, it will work fine for another day or so.

If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great.

Thank you,

Landon

Hi Landon, welcome to the forums. It seems unlikely that a new NIC in a PC would cause this behavior, I have to think it's coincidence. I'd suggest trying the server plugged into a different network port on your switch or router, see if that makes any difference. I've had a couple ports go out on my switches over the years and they would show unpredictable behavior such as this.

You can also check the Event Viewer logs on the server to see if it's reporting any issues.

Thanks for the reply.

I am going to try that today and then also eliminate that other pc for now and see if it still happens.

I have also seen switch/router ports fail where clients are connected that give similar symptoms. I have heard of at least one port that was being used for a printer causing problems for a DIY WHS (but have not personally verified).

UPDATE

ok today when I went there, it was down again. I unplugged the unit for a few minutes and then plugged it back in and turned it on.

The 3rd light flashed red twice and then went to blue and flashed non stop for at least 15 minutes. Does anyone know what that indicates?? I found a site somewhere talking about the lights, but didn't see anything specific for this one. I also turned it off and on 2 more times and it did the same thing each time.

I am thinking about trying to do a server restore, but wanted to see what you guys thought first??

Thanks guys for the help,

Landon

I also switched routers and network cables and still the same results as well...

Unplugging the server is not a good idea, the MSS is a computer and pulling the plug can cause file or OS corruption. It's likely that your server is performing a full chkdsk on all drives to verify things are ok, I'd leave it going overnight and see if it comes back. If you're not getting anywhere after you've given it some time, a Server Recovery may be your next option.

ok thanks

Yeah it's actually plugged in right now...so in the morning if it's not back online, then I think we will go for the server recovery option.

I will update this tomorrow and let everyone know what happens.

Thank you for your help,

Landon

And what's your status on this now, Landon?

Hello,

On Friday, I ended up getting the server recovery to work on the second hard drive. I called HP and told them I wanted the first drive replaced, and that's what they are going to do. So basically the second disk is now in the first slot, and then there will be a brand new disk in place for the second slot.

I still don't really know what would cause it to get corrupted like that, but things look to be in order at the moment with just the one drive running.

Thanks,

Landon
