Hi, Hello, I just purchased a recertified 485 from Newegg, any tips as to what I should or shouldn't do at this time, the beginning. Thanks

Get an AV program for it.

Welcome, twelvestring, to the world of MSS/WHS!

I am not sure I would suggest an AV program as the numero uno thing to do with the MSS! While I believe in them there are actually many users who do not use one as it is generally not used to access the network via a browser or to receive email. (SEARCH for discussions.) I would NOT recommend the McAfee AV solution that comes bundled with the MSS though. (SEARCH on McAfee and you will find it is probably the single most common problem!)

I recommend that you burn it in a while before doing anything permanent. Play with it, configure it, change it, try the shares, backups and remote access. During this period DO NOT put anything on it that you do not retain a copy of elsewhere. And do NOT do any hardware upgrades. (Adding disks OK, one at a time, 24 hours apart.) But do this with a plan to perform a Factory Reset and start over. The confidence you will build in the unit by doing this will be to your long-term advantage. And if the burn-in period will give you confidence that the hardware is OK before you commit any data to it. If there are any problems found you will have an easier time isolating them by having installed things slowly.

And I recommend looking an the MS WHS Technical Library at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd347480%28WS.10%29.aspx, specifically under the Technical Briefs at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd309758(WS.10).aspx.

Oh yeah, prowling around here will be helpful as well!

Good luck!

Yes, after doing much reading I ran across posts on AV, so I will not install any. Would there be any advantage to delay installing some packaged software? Also does someone know who is the manufacturer and model of the motherboard.

I would like to say, thank you, to those that have taken time to answer my questions, this is a very nice forum.

The motherboard is unique to HP and cannot be ordered (that I have seen anywhere) from any other source. I'd have to pull mine apart to actually see the manufacturer label (if different from HP).

Unless you use the browser in the MSS itself or read mail there it is probably low risk to delay installing AV software. That said, I would not delay too long!

Yes, thanks, I've been reading for hours, been fun. I think the motherboard is a Wistron, maybe I misspelled this. Everybody wants to upgrade processors and get techie, and this is fine. I am going to wait and see how it all pans out before I jump. Hopefully it would be foolproof or brickproof ! I should be receiving my EX485 Wednesday and going to go slow. Thanks Again. Great Forum!

Come to think of it if I had pulled it out to look I would have been posting EX475 information. But I recognize the name ... it may be the same thing! Moot point tho.

The motherboard is custom, and Wistron is the ODM that designed and manufactured the board for HP.
