The Disk Management addin shows some of the SMART status information for the internal and esata drives. It will not show it for any external USB drives.

I don't believe that Disk Management brings the Load_Cycle_Count information out where we can see it.

Anyone have another SMART tool that can be used on the MSS?

I tried a handful of the free and shareware utilities on the EX47x while investigating the feasability of a SMART add-in for the MSS, but very few if any would recognize the controller in the 47x. I think the 48x may have better support but have not investigated.

I just tried CrystalDiskInfo which I found on my Vista machine. It seems to work BUT the values look like hell. Almost enough to make me panic, even on my new disk. After a quick and VERY deep breath I decided to ignore it!

FYI, I evidently picked this up to use on my Vista Client -- but it does NOT run there. It does show all my SATA disks as well as my one eSATA.

I read all six pages of that post. I did a CTRL-F for WHS, MSS and EX470 and didn't see one reference pop up. I also noticed, for the most part, it was LINUX users - there were XP and Vista users, but more of them had low numbers from my unofficial count.

While I don't like drives going down, I have 16 of these drives (either EACS or EADS, 8 1TB and 8 750) and I have not had any go dead on me and I have not received any dead on arrival units when I first bought them. I have had 12 of the drives for over a year and a half. The other four units range from 1 year to 3 months old.

I have had one of the original 1TB drives (WD10EACS) recently cause a WHS error twice in one day (same drive), but I shut down the server and the external eSATA enclosure (where the drive is located), rebooted and no issues since.

These drives have a three year warranty and I have everything backed up. If one goes down, I'll use WD's replacement service and get a new drive. When I get close to 2.5 years with these drives I'll be upgrading to the 2TB drives so I'll have another three year warranty. It is an aggravating moment when a drive goes down, but not devastating for anyone who has redundancy.

Even less a problem if you have a spare on hand! (It's easy to pull one of my three or four rotating backup drives into service on-line until a replacement arrives!)

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I ran across this "Load Cycle Count" issue this morning. Has anyone verified that there are increased LCCs with green drives in WHS? It seems that there is a WDIDLE3 program that can alleviate the problem if indeed it is a problem. Judging from a quick search, there does not appear to be much concern from the mediasmartserver.net community.
