I don't know about the rest of you but it was a big disappointment to read that the e-sata port on the EX485/487 doesn't support port multipliers. I do hope they remedy this. I don't even have a port multiplier yet but I like the idea of being able to have one and it recognize all 4 additional drives.

What's up with that ?

Is it because of the CPU ? The review says that the only harware change is the CPU & memory , can't be the memory of course.

It's not the CPU, the whole motherboard had to change because it is now using the Intel chipset instead of the AMD chipset. That includes disk management chips. I'm sure we will overcome at sometime.

eSATA port not port-multiplier aware-- so the EX470 is? What does the multiplier do? does it allow esata enclosures show each individual drive in the MSS?

Could be a buzz kill for me too. not that this was enough for more money from me yet. I would rather have had a ESata MSS enclosure add on. hahaha

I have received word from the HP PR team that there are no plans to update the EX485/EX487 to enable Port Multiplier support on the eSATA port. :(

Alex - have you heard anything about a possible Esata MSS enclosure to add on to the MSS (T-Bone mentioned this as well)?

Unfortunately no I have not, and I think the news that Encore will not support eSATA enclosures is a very bad omen for the likelihood of HP ever producing one, at least in the near future.

That is a big downside IMO, especially if you have large amounts of data.
If you already use the eSATA port, how are you going to back that up ? I guess you have to use a ton of USB driives.

Also the limit on storage apparently went down from 16TB to 9TB??? How come ???
The max possible inside is not 4 x 1.5TB (if you use the Seagates). That would leave the 4 USB ports and the eSATA with the remaining 3TB. Very strange.

Because they (HP) aren't considering 1.5 or 2 TB drives.

485: With 1 TB each (4 internal + 1 esata + 4 USB = 9 TB).

470: With 1 TB each (4 internal + 1 port multiplier aware esata (4 bay external enclosure) + 4 USB + 16 TB). It can actually be more with a Sans Digital TR4B 4 drive USB enclosure (the 470 will recognize all 4 drives in the enclosure). And with 1.5 TB drives even more.

I wish it had 2 eSATA PM aware ports and external drive enclosures to match... oh well. My EX47X works well for me, though it crashed (blue screened) today... does it once a week lately and when I click send error report it says java is not working...

On the math above, 4+4+4=12, not 16 :) I understand what you were doing though.

I thought the max was 16TB for WHS so even more would not be possible under the OS. If that's changed I am cool with that.

Oops! Screwed the pooch on that one. Actually with 1.5 TB drives its 12 X 1.397 TB (actual) = 16.764 TB or with a 4 bay TR4U its 15 X 1.397 TB (actual) = 20.955 TB. I've seen that reference to a max of 16 TB for WHS, but I haven't been able to determine if that is correct or not.
