Before anything else, would like to thank Charles for the debug cable. I received it but never got the chance to send an email back.
The cable worked like a charm. I can now go see the BIOS.
But the reason I bought the cable is to diagnose what's going on as the server won't go back online.
I haven't turned it on for more than a year now, maybe two.

Once I turned it back on, with the debug cable, I remember why I put the MSS into hiatus, I've been hearing the click of death!
Aside from the 750GB system drive, I've only added a 2TB Seagate a while back. I'm guessing it's the system drive that's dying.

I've been reading a few threads, but to do a system recovery, I will need the recovery disk which for some reason I can't find anymore.
Anyone who can help me with this, please PM me, it'll be highly appreciated.

My primary goal right now is to revive the MSS, and copy the backups if possible.

I also read that I can plug the drive to a working computer and see if I can still access data from it?

I probably will have more questions, but I think I need to get a recovery disk first.

Thanks in advance, and glad to see people are still posting here.

:)

By the way, when I try to boot the MSS, Windows boot process hangs. And maybe after 3 or 5 minutes, it reboots.
Sometimes drives clicks, sometimes it doesn't. So I'm hopeful that system drive has still enough life until I recover everything I need.

Without the system disc you are at a standstill.
I would suspect the system drive is hosed and you need a system restore or at the most extreme a system reset.
You can try ebay for new cd's.
As far as recovery of data ,yes you can try a direct connect of the drive.
You really need the SMART plugin to check your drives.
But that is a little late now.

Just want to give an update.
While cleaning up the closet, I found the EX485 recovery disk, still sealed !!!
Removed all the drives, and plugged in a repurposed 120GB SSD in tray 1. Then tried a factory reset.

It went well. I will do another reset again later, once I'm done with the backup of the old dying 750GB system drive.

I was happy when I was able to copy some of the data last night, then the drive died again.
I think when it gets hot, the HDD dies.

Just a quick question, can I still do a Windows update of the WHS v1 ?

Oh by the way, having the debug board helped a lot.
Seeing what's going on with the server made a lot of difference.
Thanks a lot to cakalapati for still providing the service!

I can't speak for the 485 but for the ex490 all the updates still work.

Thanks. :encore:

Is your EX490 still in WHS v1?

I will force an update tonight, and see if it will get updated.

That is the first thing I do on a re-set.
Get all the HP updates.
You may end up having to uninstall and re install the connector, not sure but some do in the update process. If it happens, don't be surprised.
Get all the Microsoft updates.
Then check again.
Then It is ready to setup.

Goodluck and Enjoy.
