hi guys,

so i know a few people have upgraded to the intel q9550s cpu. what heatsink and or fan are you guys using? is the stock heatsink good enough to cool this processor?

The best method I know of is to get a debug board to enter bios and re-set the fan settings to your preference.
Of course I am talking of ramping up the fans so it will create more noise.

From my experience the stock heatsink works fine if you keep your house under 80F. During summer it gets hotter in my house so I used two 1" fans in front of the heatsink. They worked great but was louder than a F-16 taking off.

Just put a fan in front of the whole server and you should be fine.

In the future I will mod my server with an actual heatsink and fan.

well good luck finding a larger heat sink and better fan for the propriety configuration of the PSU and motherboard of the ex series server.
If you ever find one let us all know about it.

In the meantime the best method is to modify the pid of the fan speeds in the bios.

Unless you want to just buy some extra fans and place them in front and or rear of the server.

ok, so here's an update. to cool my my intel q9550s, i'm currently using a Zalman cnp2sx, found at http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Pr ... hp?Idx=790.

i had tested with the original aluminium heatsink, which proved to be unsatisfactory. machine kept shutting itself off after 5 to 15 minutes. heatsink itself was quite hot to the touch. speedfan had reported max temps of 75 degrees centigrade before the machine shut down.

i made a new mounting from the brackets that came with the heatsink, which ensured that as long as i machined everything correctly, it would have comparable rigidity to the original unmodified brackets. it took some effort to fit this properly, but it is securely fitted to the motherboard. speedfan and cpuid's hardware monitor are both reporting temps between 35 and 48 degrees centigrade at idle, far below what the original heatsink was capable of.

so, long story short, i didn't need much luck. i found a solution and made it work.

Well most users are not willing to start modifying mounting.
But at least you found a different solution

Did you take any snaps of the heatsink? before putting it all back together? I like to keep my machines as cool as possible minus the noise. My dual-core is sitting around 119-130ish Fahrenheit which is too warm for my liking. I would be curious how your fabricated mount looked and how it was all shoved into the box. Also, I've been eyeballing a quad-core for my 485 as well as a CPU upgrade for my 470..

Hi,

Unfortunately, no, I did not take any snaps. I can describe to you what I did though.

Fortunately, all the material you need is already in the package with the heatsink. You just need the tools and patience.

Attached is a picture of the Intel brackets, unmodified. Please notice that it's not completely flat, there are indentations along the length of each bracket. What I did was turn these two rigid brackets into four adjustable legs.

The first thing I did was to cut each bracket in two, between the two up facing screws in the picture that secure the brackets. Of course, the brackets were not installed on the heatsink at this time. So now, there are four, equal segments.

I pointed out earlier that there are indentations in the metal. The ones closest to the feet, or the screw holes that would secure the whole assembly to the motherboard, those indentations I turned into slots, roughly the same width as the screw holes in the feet.

After that, I cut off enough so that the side of the bracket that does not have the foot, is small and rounded enough to rotate or swivel when it is screwed onto the heatsink. Also, a bit of grinding is in order, as well as bending the metal back into place in case it is slightly warped during work. This is normal.

So now, you test-mount it. Screw the legs loosely onto the heatsink, then place it on the motherboard. Adjust the legs to see if you can get the legs to reach the holes while clearing any obstacles. It will take a bit of work to figure out how to fit it.

Once you're satisfied, throw on the thermal paste and fit the heatsink.

I know it's not all that easy to visualize, but if I have time, I'll see if I can take a few pics. Also, I did not own any of the tools I used. I had to visit a workshop, which showed me how to use the tools, after I paid a membership fee. Below, I'll list the tools used:

- Drill press with cobalt drill bit. If you can find harder drill bits, please use them. Also, use cutting fluid. Why a drill press instead of a handheld drill? The metal is extremely hard, you'll need the extra leverage that a drill press allows.

- Dremel tool or drill, to smooth the inside of the holes or slots. In theory, a drill press can be used for this too, but that's a bit of a waste for something so small.

- Grinder. Those big ones used for metal. If you can find an attachment with bristles for smoothing and rounding, that would be great.

- File. Optional. For fine finishing.

I just realized that the fan picture I attached was not the CNPS2X. However, it does use the exact same brackets or clips, therefore the picture should still suffice, despite the inaccuracy. Anyway, attached are the proper pics.

Hi,

It seems I have some pics of the HSF already mounted. Not sure how much info you can glean from them though. You may be able to see how my clips are much shorter than the standard clips, they do not extend far from the HSF at all, compared to the stock pics above.

I don't want to steal your thread but wanted to share my cooler problem and the solution i came up with. I upgraded my cpu to a E6550 and it works great, but i noticed the temp was like 65C in the winter time (70F house temp) and about 72C in summer (82F house temp). I did the upgrade over 2 years ago.

I got the same cooler you did over a year ago but haven't had time to put it it. I finally did and didn't like the results. I did install it a different way though but i think the main problem was the bottom of the cooler. It wasn't even. You can see what people say on Amazon. I tried two other coolers but didn't like the results. I wanted an easy way to install the cooler using the original hardware. I finally found a solution. I used a StarTech 775 1U CPU cooler. In the winter it keeps it in the mid 50C and summer is low 60C. Not as great as you but i think i have a CPU temp reporting problem. I haven't seen anyone one else using the same CPU as i am so i might be the only one with this issue. I am still happy with the new cooler although its a bit loud.

i'm looking to improve my cooling solution for my q9550s. any ideas on a better 1u cooler? i keep getting random shutdowns. i'm hoping it's not the cpu overheating. the temps seem to hover between 55 and 60 degrees at idle. this should be below the limit for this cpu. i'm also beginning to wonder if it's the power supply being wonky that would account for the random shutdowns.

Try putting a desk fan in front of it. It should lower your temps a lot and if you still get random shutdown I would guess its the power supply..

I have used like 3 different 1u coolers and the last one was the best for me. You can try water cooling but I never liked the idea of water in computers.
