Post subject:  Acting weird after CPU upgrade

I've been around the WHS for a couple years now with a EX470 run Server 2008 64bit as a whole-home server (1.8 AMD with 2gig at the moment). It runs perfect with the exception of a few windows updates it bellyaches about from time to time.

I acquired a EX485 on craigslist last week and after a bit of research I wanted to upgrade the CPU. I went through the "Upgrading the HP EX485/487 MediaSmart Server: Removing the smoke and mirrors" thread and installed a Dual-core 2.8 E5300 CPU (SLGTL). I modified the BIOS and the machine works with the new CPU. I have only one concern..... It doesn't fully shut down. the OS will be off, the monitor will be off, KB, Mouse, Off.. but the status indicators on the front wont ever turn off and be fully powered down. I reinstalled the celeron back into it and it works as it is supposed to but with my new CPU it doesnt power down. Also, when you just yank the power, and plug it back in it will power itself back up. the celeron does not

Any ideas? I realize the likleyness of the machine being powered off is not going to happen too often but I wanted to see if there was anything else I was causing. Also, jumpering the "J" pins doesnt let me into the bios :-/

I tried searching but all I could come up with were "dead machine" threads.

edit: I also noticed that it takes longer to respond to RDP connections with the Dual-core. At least on the initial, with a kvm attached to the server it will be at the login waiting. try a RDP connection and it wont connect as quickly.. almost a solid minute longer compared to the celeron,

blah, I hate it when i find the answer after I post the question. I usually research research research before posting the question. It would seem that with at least the 5200, there were some power issues. I must've read right over this part

from the upgrading site -
Quote:
I am using a E5200 sSpec SLB9T or other CPU
For those using the E5200 SLB9T or other CPU’s the process will be: BIOS update/CMOS clear, case disassembly, CPU removal and replacement, case re-assembly, and a couple of reboots to get everything recognized. What will be affected, the server sleep and power down functionality will no longer work correctly and temperature monitoring features will be incorrect depending on CPU, not a big deal if your server runs 24×7 like most.

I'm assuming with the 5300 it'll be similar

I have E5300s in both my EX487 and EX495. I don't have the problems you describe on the EX487. Please check out my post here: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=11315

In that post, I upgraded my BIOS by using the "hacked" EX495 BIOS, and I did so "headless" (didn't have the debug cable at the time). I've since bought debug cables so I don't have to do such tasks blind. Check that out, make sure you didn't possibly miss a step, make sure all your BIOS settings are good, etc.

Shoot me a PM and I'll snap some pics of my BIOS with my phone. It could just be a setting is wrong.

You may notice in my OP I couldn't get an E5300 to take. Turned out the original E5300 I bought for that server was bad. There's an E5300 in it now.

Well dang. That worked like a stinkin' charm - OF Corse!

Though, It still wouldn't let me into the BIOS. I'm pretty sure i set the jumper before throwing it back together.

The Core-temps seems to be looking more like they should too. before the new BIOS update, it would spike up to 150F..

Interesting, my 475 has more fan control and temp. read points where the 485 does not..... even before I was fiddling with the CPU..

I posted an update to my original post where I applied the BIOS hack without a cable. That now includes a link to download all the files from my OneDrive. If you wanted to re-flash your BIOS with the exact same BIOS I used, including the same version of the AFUWIN tool, everything is there.

I re-flashed my BIOS with the flash file that "adaptation" had in his post. It worked like a charm. will your flash help with the fan controls and temp. sensors? thats really the only thing weird i see now, (unless you know something I should check) though, i didnt see any more controls in the celleron before i flashed anything.

I will have to pull it apart and make sure i left the jumper in there in "J" so i can get into the BIOS. Thats one thing that's bugging me.

Justin, I never did anything with Adaptation's flash. I was tempted to tinker with it, but in the end I wound up using it as-is. I didn't think it was worth the risk of jacking something up and bricking the server. With respect to sensors and fans, I never detected any unusual behavior. As for the jumper, I don't recall ever changing anything with a jumper. The only mods I made were upgrading the memory, the E3400 CPU, later the E5300 CPU, and the debug cable. I don't recall changing a jumper. Mind you that was 4+ years ago, and possibly a minute detail that I neglected to commit to memory.

I did perform the "load optimal defaults" in the BIOS, save and reboot. Outside of that, I don't think I changed much. I may have made sure the CPU optimization features like NX, virtualization, etc. were all enabled.

did you have any issues with your memory upgrade with the modified BIOS? I just purchased a 4 gig stick of 6400 and the machine wont boot. stick the old 2 gig in there and its fine. I tried the 6400 in my 475 and it oddily enough likes it..

I had to settle with 5300 rather than 6400. I don't believe the difference is substantial in light work. Heavy non-stop work, may see a difference.

Come to find out I ordered "AMD Only" 6400. Both the 470 and 485 had 6400 in them so the new stick worked in the AMD box. Not a complete waste, though i had to order another stick for the 485
