Hey guys,

I apologize if this has already been asked a million times, but I looked and didn't see any posts about this. I was recently given an Hp Mediasmart Server EX85 that contained no hard drives or any software disks, just the server itself, and have some questions about getting some use out of it. I would simply like to add some drives to it and basically use it as a USB storage device accessed by USB cable instead of having to connect it to my router, if possible. I have a few WD MyBook USB drives and would like to use the server in the same way. Is this possible? If so, how would I go about doing this? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you all in advance!

Again, I'm late to the game... Anyway.
No. That is not how these things work. Sorry. You would have to rip out all the internals, and replace them with a USB RAID, adapter, and hook it all to your PC. In which case your better of just buying a USB RAID unit to start with, and just not modify it.
B!

It can and has been done.
But, You will need to Purchase a new backplane, figure a way to mount it, then you will need to purchase a power brick and figure out where/how to mount that.
Yes, you would be better off buying a $120 - $150 ready made.
Here are some that might work for you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=medisonic&N=-1&isNodeId=1
This is just a NewEgg.com search, there are other options but this should give you the idea.

You could just get a Bigger WD My Book, I give them for Xmas presents to friends/family that have no backups. =;
Good Luck
