Anyone running 4T drives in the EX 485? Any reason hardware/BIOS/other wise why they would not be supported?

OS is not an issue as I am running NAS4Free instead of a windows OS that came with the unit...

Thanks

Not quite sure but I think you should be able to. Next time I purchase a 4TB Drive I will throw one in an EX485 to see if it will work or not but I believe it will.

They have the 4tb reds now, wooohooo and they made a red 2.5 1tb which is really strange I thought, 1tb still big even for an os drive.
Anyway, just sayin.
I just bought a bunch of 2tb reds, coarse they would come out with the 4 early. #-o

What format does that NasForFree use something non windows?

Not sure what format it actually uses because I do not play in that world but it may be a RAID Configuration but sorry to say that's not my area of expertise.

Ok so you mention 4TB Reds but no links, no prices and now I have to go and ask Google where they are and decide if that's where I want to go. Of course if they come out with a 5TB Drive then why bother with 4TB but that's what I have been buying since April 1st this year no fooling either.

NasForFree for is capable of using multiple formats. The one I used is the UFS file system which I think is its native format. Arrayed the drives in a simple JBOD array. You mount drives, build arrays, and create shares from a web page but at the end of the day, the file structures are available in windows using the CIFS/SMB service. I used windows explorer to perform all file functions just like any other directory from my windows desktop PC or at least I did till I broke of the figgin cap on the DB...

Newegg had the 4 TB WD Reds for $179 for 24 hours. I picked up 2 of them to fill out my EX 485. The other two drives are 1.5 TB Samsungs.

After formatting the drives, nas4free is reporting the following:
Disk Size Description Device model
ada0 1430800MB disk0 SAMSUNG HD154UI
ada1 3815448MB disk1 WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0
ada2 1430800MB disk2 SAMSUNG HD154UI
ada3 3815448MB disk3 WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0
TOTAL 10492494.0

Formatting the JBOD array reports:
/dev/concat/raid0p1: 10492494.0MB (21488628600 sectors) block size 32768, fragment size 4096
using 16759 cylinder groups of 626.09MB, 20035 blks, 80256 inodes.

From my desktop win7 PC windows is seeing 9.69 TB

So far, so good...
