A few weeks ago the PSU in my EX487 decided it was time to call it quits. At first I decided to sell the server, and even had a buyer. However, seller's remorse kicked in. The EX487 and EX490 (my other MediaSmart Server) have been incredibly reliable, plus they run quiet and cool. Even when using the "high performance" Windows power profile, the MediaSmart Server is easy on the electric bill.

I saw talk here regarding the Overtek PSUs. Unfortunately, the link was from 2010 that took me to a nonexistent eBay page.

I decided to Google around for EX487 PSU. Luckily the EX47x/48x/49x can use the same PSU. After much probing I finally wound up at ATXPowerSupplies.com, and this model: http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/270-wat ... E-MS-EX487.

I ordered the PSU and it arrived a couple days later. It worked perfectly, but unfortunately it has one major shortcoming. It has a huge bundle of cables, including SATA power, a floppy power cable and other stuff. It made it impossible to put the small door back on the front of the server, and of course it was impossible to close the large door.

I lamented about this to Comp1962, who pointed me to the Overtek page on eBay. It looked like my default settings didn't search UK listings, and once I found the EX48x PSU, I went ahead and ordered one. I opted for the standard shipping, and it came amazingly fast--less than a week! More importantly, it is a perfect fit in the server, and works flawlessly!

I'll hold on to the first PSU I ordered as a backup. If the one in my EX490 decides to call it quits, at least I have a reserve until I can get another one from Overtek!

Tell ya one thing Matt.... Just having a spare PSU in hand helps out a lot when an issue does arise and you suspect a PSU. I have purchased failed units where the previous owners did not want to purchase a PSU for fear that the problem was with the motherboard. Its hard to justify buying a PSU and not knowing if that's the problem or not. Having a spare takes that stress out of the equation. Since you have multiple MSS units the spare PSU will be a useful troubleshooting tool. I keep spare PSU's here for troubleshooting and to use for various projects I work on which reminds me I need to pickup a spare PSU for my Desktop and Server which use the same Corsair Modular PSU.

Not sure if Overtek uses specific part numbers. What they do is take an existing PSU and modify it to be compatible with the HP MSS. If you contact them and ask them which PSU they are currently reworking for MSS Compatibility they will be more than happy to let you know.

I would think this 300watt PS would allow the use of a higher wattage cpu.

Shucks, it's already installed in my server so I don't recall the exact model number. It had the name Seventeam on the label. It looked brand spanking new, not at all like a modified cast-off.

Here's the exact listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1081590834 it says ST-300FUB.

Overtek ships fast too. I'm in the US and Overtek is in the UK. From the time I ordered it, to the time I actually received it, was less than a week. And I chose the standard shipping. Talk about fast!

Hi,

Mine has been whining off/on now and then (I shut it down, use a can of air to blow out as best I can the fans behind the HDD's and PSU/front of the unit) and I am not sure which is causing the issue, the 2 behind the drives or the PSU itself. Are the fans behind the drives replacable easily enough, and the PSU itself if I chose to pick up one of these as well? Email me at msoucy@comcast.net if you can answer these questions since I don't frequent here too often. I do back up my media to my DNS-323 just in case things went south and I had to get a new one (build one most likely and run Win8 Pro as the MSS if I had to).

Thanks,

Mike
