OK, here's the situation, my EX485 has two old back-up profiles but I no longer have the old PC's; I've had a red light on the server face for many months now :(

My family has merged over from Win7 to Macs (Mountain Lion), on mine I also have parallels w/ Win7; so, I do have access to a Windows platform.

The server is EX485, WHS v1 - Original Processor & BIOS, Original 750 GB HD + a 1TB in the second bay .

I remember that "HP Connector" died several years ago; however, I can type in the IP address and get to the HP MSS Home page, I can see the shared folders and what-not like that. I can also see files and folders w/ my Macs - Finder.

I just received all the parts to upgrade my server to WHS 2011 (Processer, Mem Stick, WHS 2011 software + a third 1 TB HD). In Alex's article "... removing the smoke and mirrors" he says to eliminate any health issues before proceeding.

1. How do I delete the old back-ups, that are no longer needed?
2. Do I have to delete anything in the registry?
3. I probably should run a CHKDSK on the existing HDs?
4. How do I RDC into the server?

Thanks in advance. :)

If you have Win 7 installed on your MAC then use Remote Desktop Connection in Windows 7. http://www.mediasmartserver.net/wiki/in ... te_Desktop

Since you can still access the Shared Folders I would recommend you copy all the files that are important to you that are on the server.

I would assume that there is nothing other than the files on the server that would be of importance to you and once you have the files then you can simply proceed with the WHS2011 install which will format the System Drive and install WHS2011. Once that's done you can format the remaining drives. You do not have to have all the drives in the server when you install WHS2011 just the System Drive. Since you will have a debug cable you will be able to work with your EX485 much the same as you would any other Windows Desktop.
