Hello sorry I'm new on this website. Also I know I should be using search button and i did but I'm a little confused.

Basically I have an Hp ex485 server. I'm trying to update my memory CPU and Os

Problem is what do I do first.
I read that I can swap the CPU no problem but I also have to flash the bios. But I'm confused do I need to flash the bios before I install the new CPU or before with the stock celeron?

I just purchased this cpu

Please help me with the steps on how to do this upgrade

Here is a guide you can read through to help you with your CPU Upgrade:

Part 2: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2011/04 ... rs-part-2/

Good Luck with your upgrade:

So I do not have to mess with bios flashing if I'm upgrading to a e5200 slay7 correct?

Personally I can't comment if the E5200 will work or not but the 2 part guide should help you to determine if the processor will work and what if anything you need to do to prepare your server for its installation.

GGonxhi - You should NOT have to mess with any bios modification with the E5200 SLAY7 from my understanding. I did an updgrade using a E5200 SLB9T, and this did require the bios modification.

From Comp1962's first link:

Required steps for the following processors:

I am using a E5200 sSpec SLAY7 or QFHQ
The process will be: case disassembly, CPU removal and replacement, case re-assembly, 2 reboots and it’s done! The BIOS setting for Dual Core Enabled will automatically updated in the BIOS. Speed stepping will be left enabled by default. (to optimize performance read the Speed Stepping discussions later in the article.)

Also if you need help with the disassembly/re-assembly, here's a great guide (process is the same for the 485):

You would flash your bios before swapping the CPU. So the machine is still functional at that point.

I just bought a new CPU as well. Yet with the e5200 I bought it shouldn't require a BIOS update as it is a SLAY. Hopefully I get lucky. It is arriving today.

Also, you may be needing a VGA adapter to properly do a bios update, although I have read reports of people successfully flashing thier bios with a properly configured USB stick, without a VGA adapter.
