Did you ever find the answer to this problem? I have run into the same issue upgrading my HP EX485 to WHS 2011. Works fine in IDE mode but AHCI just hangs in BIOS. Modifications to the server are 4GB Ram and a E5200 dual-core. Tried two different drives with the same results

When I built my desktop win7 with a ssd .
I had used the default bios setting of ide.

Then I found out that AHCI should have been what I used.

The proper procedure should have been change the bios before installing the OS.

There is a microsoft fix tool.
The problem is when you install a os using ide in bios. The OS installs drivers only for that mode not AHCI.
To force windows to load the drivers for ahci.
You first must boot in ide mode.
Run the tool or manually edit the registry.
Then reboot and goto bios change to AHCI.
I do recall I had to reboot twice to finish the install.

I am not sure if WHS is a supported OS.

Unfortunately that is exactly what I attempted to do.

I had the machine running in AHCI mode, performed the WHS 2011 install and then on the first reboot it hung at discovering the device in BIOS. I tried two different drives (both Western Digitals) with the same results. These drives were previously working in AHCI with WHS v1 software so I don't expect the drives.

In the end I just switched to IDE and WHS 2011 installed correctly. I have been searching the net but have only found a few other people that have had this issue and no one has posted a solution that I have seen. Most people who see this reinstall in AHCI mode and it works fine. I haven't had that kind of luck.

Thanks for the response though!

So an update!

I decided that maybe it was BIOS related and grabbed the "hacked" BIOS from this forum and performed the upgrade. Once I did that and rebooted my machine it reinstalled the board drivers and I was up and running with AHCI!

Thanks :mss:
