Post subject:  Update HP Ex485 Question

Hello,

I am running v 2.5 of the software on my HP EX 485. I have been having some issues with my machine(hangs when it is supposed to wakeup) for the last few weeks since I upgraded the LightsOut Add in from v 1.0.4 to 1.5.1. I don't want to point the finger totally at that add-in which has worked like a charm for a few years now. I am going through some troubleshooting steps which may resolve the problem, but in case I am not able to the worst case scenario is to reinstall the OS which I am loathe to doing.

I had ordered the 3.0 version of the disc some time back and I never got around to upgrading my system. If I were to upgrade(2.5->3.0), I don't want to lose any of the data I have in my shares, but just upgrade the OS and HP's software to v3.0 to a factory install. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Gundan

A Server Recovery with the 3.0 disk should upgrade your system while leaving your data intact, though it is always wise to backup any important data. Be sure to see my guide if you've not yet read it: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/02 ... re-update/

Alex,

Thanks for your post and feedback. When I do a server restore to 3.0 will I lose all the 3rd party stuff that I have installed on the WHS?

Thanks,
Gundan

Yes but this is the case with all Server Recoveries so any ADD-INS or additional software you had installed on the server would have to be reinstalled. While your data will be preserved you will have to resetup the server and should you see any alerts pertaining to your client database being corrupt and needs to be repaired, just ignore those alerts and simple download all the server updates from Microsoft and HP and those alerts will go away.

Good Luck with your recovery and as Yakuza suggested its always wise to backup your data before performing a recovery but its always wise to have backups regardless of what your doing. Your data should exist in multiple locations for optimum protection. While your server does a great job duplicating this does you no good if something horrible like a fire or flood were to occur.

Should you have additional questions please feel free to post them.
