Hi guys

I have to agree with double_d I also get the no sound card error message which has to manually cleared each time my WHS reboots - usually without me noticing until I try to use one of my apple tv's...

Does anyone have any ideas how to overcome this problem as I have to RDC into the server and re-start iTunes client manually and acknowledge the error message...?

This is the one thing I would really love to automate... Plus how do I place iTunes in the windows scheduler - where do I find that on WHS? Although I guess without having a way around the sound card error message...

Cheers

It is not an add-in. Heck, it doesn't even much like running under Windows Home Server (which is why those who ask for ways to kill the error dialogs on program start-up are likely to remain disappointed). Install it like any other client program.

FWIW, the 10.0.1 iTunes update does not seem to want to install cleanly on WHS and I am going to explore that some. We're probably back to doing the 9.x installer package surgery as detailed in a link I posted previously in this thread.

from another thread:
Cliff wrote:
I have also installed iTunes 10.0.1.22 on my WHS machine. The instructions from the crunchgear site are no longer accurate. Delete the only row in iTunesSetup -> ServiceInstall as there are no rows in ServiceControl. That was the only change I made to the various msi files. iTunes installed successfully, albeit not without a few error dialogs popping up along the way.

The 10.0.1 upgrade did not function correctly on my WHS. The client would hang and become unresponsive and require a forced termination from the task manager. I uninstalled 10.0.1.22, both iTunes and Quicktime, and attempted to reinstall 10.0.0. The 10.0.0 installation program raised an error this time. I suspect a server restart after I uninstalled 10.0.1 might have corrected this. But…I reinstalled a version 9.02 client instead. This client couldn't read the library files as the internal format had apparently changed with the introduction of version 10. The 10.0.0 client installed cleanly over the 9.0.2 client, but I had problems with the client becoming unresponsive. A server restart seems to have corrected that problem and the 10.0.0 client is behaving normally now.

And that's why I hang on to old software versions….

edit: Something more than just the version change is going on here. The 10.0.0 client is becoming similarly unresponsive. The other big change to the server yesterday was my having it join a SBS 2008 domain, which brought it under that domain's firewall rules. I removed the server from the domain and demoted it to a workgroup and restarted the server. Then I uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and restarted the server. I next ran ccleaner against the registry until it came up clean, then restarted the server. Finally, I reinstalled iTunes 10.0.0 and Quicktime, and launched the iTunes client. And now I monitor things...

I will post any interesting findings and outcomes in this thread from here on out: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=9119

Copy the file you downloaded from Apple to the server, log in to the server via RDP, then double-click on the file. It will install successfully.

The jury is still out on its long term stability running on WHS, but I don't have any fresh insights to offer there.

Cliff,
I have very similar setup at home like yours - AppleTV connected to Denon receiver (for music and video) and an Airport Express that we use to stream music remotely.

I am new to WHS but I have been using iTunes for more than four years. I have installed full iTunes 10.x on WHS. Could you please guide me on how to share the library on my home computers? I have two Windows 7 machines, a mac mini and a Macbook Pro. Ideally, I would love to simply open a remote library and not bother aboud copying music/video files on all laptops.

I remember reading a post somewhere how to export the library on the server and use 'shift' key to open a remote library. Unfortunately, I hit a snag - when I export the library on WHS, I get a file with extension .xml; iTunes is looking for a file with extension .itl from Windows machines. I tried pointing iTunes to the .xml file but I got an error, "This library file is not valid or damaged...".

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Gaurav

Sharing functionality is part of iTunes and exposed on the Sharing pane of the Preferences dialog. Enable the share checkbox on your WHS iTunes library, and enable the 'look for shared libraries' checkbox on each client computer. Nothing difficult there, assuming that's all you want to do of course.

is there any need to disable the itunes server that comes preinstalled on the WHS EX495 before installing the normal itunes 10 client version?

I can't think of any good reason to run both the Firefly (iTunes) service and a full blown iTunes client. I have Firefly disabled via the Services console.

Cliff,

I have a few questions. iTunes needs to be "reworked" to install on WHS v1 right? You installed your version over a "reworked" version of iTunes 9 is that right? None of the installs where from a clean install of WHS just on top of other iTunes installs right? What version of iTunes are you running currently?

Im currently stuck on version 8.2(??). I would love to install a newer version. the only error I currently get it the sound isnt configured correctly.

This post talks about an approach that works, but is somewhat more complicated than it needs to be: viewtopic.php?p=73735#p73735
I tested that approach and identified the steps that could be bypassed in this post: viewtopic.php?p=75322#p75322

Both of those posts go into ample detail on how to successfully install and run iTunes 10 without any runtime errors.
