Damian,

Can you stream your MKVs to the PCH via myiHome or is MKV streaming to PCH via SMB only? I made an MKV of Avatar yesterday using your guide, but it wouldn't play via myiHome. Via SMB the video and audio suttered. I couldn't fast forward to see if the subtitles worked; the movie just froze and I couldn't figure out how to see the chapters.

You are using the A-110, correct?

OK, here are some interesting observations:

A110:

- Played with myiHome, but stuttering, and then craps out myiHome. I then tested out smaller mkvs (such as SD DVDs or compressed Blu Ray mkvs) and myiHome plays perfect
- SMB - won't play at all.

C200:

- Played via myiHome flawless, including with forced subs and chapters
- Played via smb flawless, including with forced subs and chapters

I also just grabbed the m2ts file for comparison (approx 43GB) and it plays fine on the A110 (but no chapter support). So I am thinking that the hardware on the older A110 chokes on Avatar due to its high bitrate/filesize in an mkv. This appears to only affect mkvs and not m2ts, and only affects the A110

Thanks. I saved the mkv file for later use if Sybas ever fixes the C/A-200 m2ts file issue and I buy a C-200 or A-200.

Just as a quick reference point, on my first post I linked to an article I had written comparing the file size of an mkv vs a ts/m2ts, and had concluded that an mkv has less overhead and thus a smaller filesize when compared to the similar ts/m2ts. I have been slowly going through my collection and moving my ts Blu Rays over to mkvs. I just did Iron Man today, and thought it would be interesting to share the file sizes:

File # 1:

Container: ts
Specs: Main Movie, TrueHD and secondary AC3 audio
Filesize: 31.143GB

File # 2:

Container: mkv
Specs: Main Movie, TrueHD and secondary AC3 audio
Filesize: 28.916GB

So by moving to mkv I saved approx 2.2GB of space, with the mkv proving to be 7% more efficient. In the grand scheme of things 2GB is not a lot, but as movie collections keep growing the 2GB does add up.

Damian, I recently noticed that the new version of VideoRedo TVSuite H.264 supports MKV, I think it can author them as well as edit. Have you ever tried this program? I have found the original TVsuite to be very good and have used it quite extensively.

You can also get the newest beta version here:

http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/showthread.php?t=24328

I'd be interested to see what you thought of it, I am not setup yet to ripping my blurays. I will be there soon though.

[Edited: Link was not the most recent beta release.]

I had actually talked about it briefly here for cutting out commercials from my dvr recordings:

http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/12 ... t-top-box/

At the time it did not have mkv support. It did seem like a solid program and I have good things about. However, for the most part with my setup it really didn't have much use, especially given the price point. I don't really have a need to author any videos, pretty much I just rip my Blu-rays with AnyDVD + Clown_BD and for my TV Shows the commercials get cut out already with MCEBuddy/ShowAnalyzer. If I was looking t o do more in the way of authoring I would probably seriously consider TV Suite.

What are you looking to accomplish?

Primarily I was thinking about using it in conjunction with AnyDVD to pull out the main movie from a BR rip and convert it to MKV. This is what I have done with my DVDs to DVR-MS in the past. It has also been a good tool for pulling out individual episodes of a TV series disc to seperate files, its especially usefull when the episode spans a couple files in the DVD structure.

I am just not sure at this point how many of the desired features (subtitles, multiple audio channels etc.) of your ideal MKV converter it posesses. It has really been the swiss army knife of DVD ripping and converting in the past.

If you already have AnyDVD there are plenty of free tools for pulling TV episodes off of discs, here is a writeup I did discussing:

http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/07 ... -episodes/

Same thing with DVDs/Blu-rays, many free tools to just grab the main movie and throw in an mkv or folder structure.

If you are just looking to rip your collection I am not sure that TV Suite is worth the cost tbh

Since I already have V3, the upgrade to H.264 is only $26, I'll probably try it first before I decide to drop the cash. Although, it will probably come in handy for simple editing once I get an HD video camera. I will definitely try some of the other programs that are out there. It would be nice to have something installed on my server that would work in conjuction with My Movies so I wouldn't have to have any manual intervention. LOL, you probably have that in one of your guides as well. I need to read through them all, you are a busy guy!

BTW, thanks for all of your contributions to the comminty, I am sure you have helped many people improve their entertainment setup over the years!

A $26 upgrade fee is not bad at all. I don't think I have seen anything that would work auto in conjunction with My Movies. I don't know if the My Movies dev's have looked at adding that additional functionality as it would definitely increase their user base. Not even sure how easy it is to do without manual intervention, especially since somehow the program will need to be smart enough to grab the correct playlist. I have just gotten use to my work flow which for Blu-rays which is just AnyDVD + Clown_BD and for TV Box sets MakeMKV.

Glad you have found this stuff helpful. We have all been there trying to figure all this stuff out, so just glad I can be of help. Definitely write back on how it goes with TVSuite

Sounds like the guys at My Movies are working on an option to rip to MKV in a future release of the WHS2011 software.
