Sorry I couldnt be more help. I know the ps3 can stream mp4's. Im interested in a resolution to this though. I am looking to get a sony tv with the capabilities as yours so I wont need an appletv or ps3 and can just go straight from the mss itself. Im thinking the resolution is still in the server software be it twonky, WMC, PS3 media Server, or what have you.

Agreed, I think your best bet it to use server software such as TVersity or PS3MediaServer. Keep in mind that it transcodes your files to a format that your player (in this case TV) supports so it will put stress on your MSS CPU

Was wondering why out moderator recommended the PS3, with no mention of XBox that is mentioned by HP-MSS, I ran across the following; "Therefore, the 360’s multimedia capabilities are actually quite poor. It supports MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and MPEG-4 AVC (h.264), but only in the WMV, MOV, and TS container formats. It supports DLNA, so is able to discover files on DLNA software like Windows Vista." (circa 2007) I know HP converter videos are not in the mentioned 'containers' but can't confirm if the Xbox has been upgraded. I would 'crap' if I get a 360 home and served 'converted videos folders' show up empty on the TV, like they do now without a extender. I would prefer Xbox wireless N as opposed to PS3's B/G wireless but the PS3 got the Blu-Ray player. And lastly the PS3 might be more compatible with the Bravia TV. Any thoughts.

Who mentioned PS3? I mentioned PS3MediaServer, which actually has nothing to do with the PS3 aside from the name. It is DLNA software that will transcode your content to any UPNP device (such as PS3, Xbox360, etc...). By transcoding it allows for virtually any of your UPnP devices to play back your library regardless of whether or not the format is supported.

Now one thing I will say, if someone is looking for a Media Extender to play back their streamed content I actually would not recommend the PS3 or Xbox360

My mistake about the PS3Media Server software.

What extender might you recommmend for use with MSS & mp4's?

It's interesting a MSS can stream mp4 to iPhones but not your TV.

A Win 7 PC can stream mp4's to a TV.

But not the HP-MSS, Twonky or WMP11.

In my house I use PCH and Dunes (if you check out the reviews section you can see some of my reviews). Since you are really only looking at mp4s though really most players out there can handle (such as WD TV Live, ATV2, ASUS Oplay, etc...)

you should give this a look before you shell out a couple hundred dollars on an extender.

It talks about the XBR9 and getting it to work with videos. I dont know how happy you are with the sony video interface, for me the interface is a maker or breaker regardless of the other features. Thus the reason the appleTV (v1) gets so much play at my house. Looking at Boxee box recently but not sure how everyone that uses my TV will like interface. if you give the above a try let us know what you think and some screen shots of the TV interface. I like the idea of less equiptment

All,

We may be one step closer to solving the streaming video from HP HomeServer EX490 to a Sony XBR9 TV's.

Good news:
I've been able to stream a .mpg file!! The quality isn't great but i'm able to successfully stream a short (ie. 6min home video) from my HP EX490 to my Sony XBR9 with no additional hardware or software purchases.

Sad new:
I can't replicate my success. I can't remember the which software i used to transfer my home video to my laptop. With the help of MediaInfo i was able to capture the following specs of my short video:

General
Complete name : \\HOMESERVER\Server_Videos\Easter Egg Hunt 2008.mpg
Format : MPEG-PS
File size : 300 MiB
Duration : 6mn 22s
Overall bit rate : 6 570 Kbps

Video
ID : 224 (0xE0)
Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@Main
Format settings, BVOP : No
Format settings, Matrix : Default
Format settings, GOP : M=1, N=18
Duration : 6mn 22s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 5 991 Kbps
Nominal bit rate : 9 000 Kbps
Width : 720 pixels
Height : 480 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Standard : NTSC
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.578
Stream size : 273 MiB (91%)

Audio
ID : 128 (0x80)
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Mode extension : CM (complete main)
Duration : 6mn 22s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 448 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : Front: L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 16 bits
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 20.4 MiB (7%)

I hope the info above will help others solve this issue.

thanks
Harty01

Have you tried ps3mediaserver as the server instead of the default windows media sharing? It should work fine with the tv.

[edit]Oops....ignore...it was mentioned in the last few posts...[/edit]
