What is the best way to copy your protected DVD's to your HP MediSmart server?

Will you be able to stream your copied DVD's using MediaSmart connect?

Help! I have hundreds of kid's DVD's that I want to preserve digitally on the HP MediaSmart server and be able to view in any room in my house.

I use DVDFab. It's the best out there for ripping, IMO. The decrypter part is free to use. It will rip a DVD to base .VOB format in about 20 minutes. You are then free to copy it to your server. As for streaming to the MediaSmart connect,(MSC) I doubt that the MSC will see your .VOB files, much less play them.

You will most likley need to re-encode the .VOB's to something else to get the MSC to play them.

Yes DVDFab HD Decrypter (free version) is very good and is constantly updated.

To play your DVDs using the MSC you will need to install PV Connect on your server and use something like DVD Decrypter to create a single large vob or use DVDFab and then either use a combine DOS command or something like VideoReDo to combine the vobs into one large mpeg. Either way you will lose menus and subtitles.

If you are also considering BluRay and/or HD DVD rips as well, I'd recommend AnyDVD HD ... since you'll kill all birds with one stone.

They will be changing their pricing at the start of the new year (sounds like it will be subscription based, ala virus SW), so you may want to jump on now. The current purchase gives you lifetime updates.

If DVD is your only concern though, yes, there are quality free ones available.

DVDFab HD Decrypter does BluRay as well and is free.

BTW, AnyDVD is now charging $ for the updates and well yes you guessed it.....DVDFab is not!
